Re: Did you allow your LO to have cake on their 1st B-day?

I was TOTALLY against it with both of my girls, but I relented this time when ds turned one in September. We each had a cupcake - I gave ds one and we taped him eating it, which was really cute. He didn't really even make as much of a mess as I expected - and we just put him in the bath when he was finished.

We do carrot or banana cake with cream cheese frosting for their 1st B-day.

Re: Did you allow your LO to have cake on their 1st B-day?

Our LO is 11 months old, so we are fast approaching her first b-day... She did have her first taste of sweets at Thanksgiving... pumpkin pie, lemon ice box pie and Strawberry flavored cake for our nieces 2nd b-day.... but she only had like a bite of each thing to try... I don't think a little sugar once in awhile is bad, but I have been holding off giving her any sugar until now. (She might have had a few small tastes of ice cream along the way too when I wasn't looking!: giggle: )

So, yes I was envisioning a traditional first birthday cake... altho carrot cake sounds good! I may try doing that...

Of course, nothing wrong with sugar in moderation. I am making an organic choc cake for ds's upcoming 1st bday!

My dd had her very own *smash cake*. She was scared of it at first, then dug right in. She probably only had a couple of licks of the icing. She wasn't interested in eating it at all.

For my daughter I made her a special carrot cake sweetened with applesauce. With my son I just said the heck with it and gave him regular chocolate cake. I think my daughter enjoyed hers more, though.

We got some awful, sugar laden sheet cake with butter cream frosting in all sorts of unnatural colors YUM!
My DD is on a very healthy vegetarian diet, but I decided that I was just going to let her go to town on this awful cake.
The crazy kid would not eat it!!! Can you believe it?
Sooooo, I guess I technically allowed it...she just chose to eat a bunch of broccoli and hummos instead

Yep!

I get my kids a cake for their Bdays just because its tradition. Though they would rather just a huge bowl of Strawberries! lol

Re: Did you allow your LO to have cake on their 1st B-day?

Yep we did. I made her a banana cake, although I did put "real" frosting on it (homemade). The recipe is below. I didn't think it was very "good" but thats because there is no sugar in it so its not very sweet, but all the babies really liked it. I made DD a little bear shaped cake and the other little ones got a cupcake version.

Oh...all us "big kids" had a yummy ice cream cake. I gave DD a bite, but the ice cream was too cold for her

BANANA CAKE

2/3 c. banana, mashed
1/2 c. butter, softened
3 lg. eggs
3/4 c. water
2 c. unbleached flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
Optional: 1 c. chopped walnuts OR 1/2 c. chopped walnuts & 1/2 c. raisins

Grease and flour a 9 x 13 inch pan. Beat together mashed banana and soft butter until creamy. Beat in water. In a separate bowl, beat eggs until very foamy. Beat into mixture. Blend in flour, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon. Beat until smooth. Stir in walnuts or walnuts and raisins, if desired. Spread batter evenly in pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean. Cool. Serves 8-10.
