seat belts after age 8

My 8 1/2 and almost 10 year old are beyond carseats, but the shoulder strap cuts them across the neck. Is there anything that anyone out there does to help with this other than putting them into a britax for children up to 80 lbs? This is not an option with 5 children. I'm buying a new seat for my infant, and one for my 4 year old, but can't spend the $1000 it would cost to put them all in Britax!

DS1 is 9 and in a booster seat. He is nowhere near 4'9 so it is unsafe for him to be without one. I'd wager he'll hit 12 before he's out of it. I just got him a turbo booster.

You can just get a booster for them. All it does is sit them up higher so that the shoulder belt fits correctly.

If the seatbelt isn't fitting right then they definately should be in boosters. Children should be in boosters until they can pass the 5 step test, no matter how old or tall they are. Here's a link to the 5 step test http://www.carseat.org/Boosters/630.htm HTH!

Sounds like a booster would be just what they need, if they are too tall for one with a back at their age a backless might be in order.

I'm with everyone that's suggested a booster. I can't afford a Britax for all my kids either, so I use boosters for the older ones that meet all the requirements but are just a tad bit at that level where the seat belt doesn't fit, ya know?

Re: seat belts after age 8

i will probably get a couple of boosters as suggested. Thanks. Now I have to be "mean mommie" and make them return to boosters. My older 2 so looked forward to turning 8 so that they could be done with boosters... that was all that my daughter wanted for her birthday. I'm not sure that I can fit 3 boosters in the back of my Kia Sodona, but I'll try. I sure hate the middle back seat belt. It even cuts me across the neck if I sit there - the shoulder strap comes out of the ceiling! So dumb.

use a booster rated to 100lbs
Or get an 86-Y harness installed (works w/ and w/o a booster, works up to 168lbs made by E-Z-On Pro)
I have 5 kids in harnesses. The Kyle Miller Foundation helped us out.

Re: seat belts after age 8

definitely a booster....and even if they're over 100lbs (my 8yo is) a booster is still best if they're not tall enough cause they just boost them up to the right place for the seatbelt, the seatbelt is what holds them in
we have a noback cosco for my oldest, was $10 (on sale, $15 regularly) it's tight on her hips but i couldn't fit the wider cosco prospect booster in w/ the britax regent and graco snugride seats
my 8yo is not thrilled being back in a booster (i had taken her out cause she was over the 100lbs, but decided w/ the way they work that an overlimuit child w/ a booster is better than not) but she knows its for her safety, not just me being mean

my 8 yo was in a booster til last year... he is 5ft tall and 90lbs now though, my 5yo will be in a booster til 80lbs and 4ft9 which is coming quick, so i'd say booster.
