Talking David is gifted!!

today went to see his spec ed teacher (preK spec ed) thinking we were going to talk about how his been doing and such. well they tested my little boy and his IQ is 137
this is the kid that didnt talk til he was 4 and thinking he will have to be in special classes if I put him in kinder next year.
so they 'kicked' him out of the program cuz he doesnt qualify anymore. its kind of bittersweet though, he has been taking OT/ST classes since he was 18mo. Now I got a brainiac in my hands LOL im soo proud had to share with you all

Re: David is gifted!!

It is exciting to hear that our children our gifted. Congrats to your LO and family! And to think...not verbal!

I knew our Nathan was smart, but I didn't think gifted. I'm a teacher and I have thought certain students were, and they never tested in the program. So when Nathan's 2nd grade teacher brought it up...I told dh that he was in charge of all that.

Yep...last February we got the results.

The thing to remember is that giftedness has a spectrum. Nathan is verbal (although as a youngster one day care told me they thought something was wrong with him...yeah he hated your joint and you people didn't stimulate him!) but his math skills aren't near his verbal/reading. He's not struggling by no means...he's on grade level.

We were actually going to take him out of school this year. Sadly, some teachers aren't educated in the fact that giftedness doesn't EQUAL PERFECT! They make mistakes. The rate of learning is superior to peers. He has a decent teacher this year (the first one quit after the 2nd day and I was soooooooooooooo excited.when I learned she had her master's degree in GIFTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....but whatever...her loss.)

He knows he's smart, he's in the gifted program, but he's not big headed about it.

A few weeks ago the gifted resource students put on a Poetry Alive night. Nathan did great! Anyway, a mom...known to always mention her child's IQ was talking to me.....she was in love with Ben (our baby). She said that her son had huge head....gave me her birth story....then said "yeah, I tell him that's because of his 140+ IQ" she said the number...but I forgot. I don't bring up my child's giftedness. That's just me personally.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted to shout it to everyone when we first heard....I was proud of him....but....some folks just don't understand!

Be proud of your little ones! I'd spend the next few years reading about gifted children.......it is amazing to have a bright child...but can be FRUSTRATING!!!! lol

(oh...to think....he was formula feed! someone told dh that bf babies are smarter....dh said, well our oldest is smart (he didn't tell her gifted) and was on formula...she said...oh just think how much smarter this one will be! HA!

Re: David is gifted!!

That's funny about your son not really talking. Have you ever heard of Einstein syndrome? Basically it is gifted children who have speech issues, so called because Einstein, I guess didn't really talk but was a genius. I can imagine it is very exciting to hear your child is gifted.

We took our older two (6 and 4 at the time) to a naturopath and as he was looking over our oldests results, he said she is smarter than he is, that she has an astronomical amount of brain activity. I knew she was smart, but that surprised me, as I know that man is extremely intelligent himself.

Re: David is gifted!!

You know in talking with alot of special needs family's I have found that alot of the kids are also gifted. Kearnan is over 140 IQ, his computer abilities are actually frightening. He is also autistic. So many people think autistic equals stupid but that just isnt' the case, just because he can't verbally communicate the same as others doesn't mean he has nothing going on you know. Sometimes when people are being particularly snarky about his behaviors on his bad days I will look at them and say "Actually he's a genius, he is just behaving this way so idiots like you wont feel threatened by his inteligence." It shuts them up pretty fast anyway.

Must be an IQ thing.
