Getting mastitis

I'm sure that's what's going on. I've had a plugged duct, or maybe ducts, for a couple days now and they're not clearing up and now I'm starting to feel sick.

With my second baby I had infections and problems repeatedly. I actually ended up in the hospital one time and the doctor actually scheduled surgery to drain the mass before I got a second opinion. With my third, I had no problems at all. Now, my fourth baby is five weeks old and I'm hurting

I know everything to do about it, and I'm doing it, but nothing's working well enough. I'm massaging the lump (it's about the circumference of a golf ball now) and I can't tell if I'm starting to bruise the tissue or if it's just getting worse.

Please cross your fingers for me! I really can't afford to get sick this week!

Re: Getting mastitis

I had mastitis last month (ds was 3 mos). I had started feeling icky on a weekend, and was proactive because I didn't want to be on antibiotics. Here's what I did per kellymom.com.
  1. LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER!
  2. Warm compresses on the affected area
  3. Swallowing 5-6 raw garlic cloves a day
  4. taking vitamin C
  5. drinking echinacea tea
  6. LOTS of nursing and pumping on both sides.
it cleared up in about 2 days.

Re: Getting mastitis

i also just had mastistis and was able to kick it on my own. many to you mama. you know what to do, so hopefully you'll be able to get rid of it soon. at my worst, it was the sickest i've been in a LONG time, but i stayed in bed, drank lots of water, and nursed nursed nursed. i woke up in a pool of sweat and felt a little better, and improved throughout the day. it took another two days before my breast felt totally better. good luck.

Re: Getting mastitis

i had mastitis and wasn't able to kick it on my own - it is an infection and often needs antiobiotics to clear it up! I waited too long and got pretty sick and ended up having to get a shot in the bum so stay on top of it! The clues are a fever, flu like symptoms and a bright red, hot breast good luck mama!
