Nasty frozen BM?

I froze a ton of BM and have recently gone to use some. A few were bad but I got one today that still tated sweet but freezerburnt?!?! Is all my milk going to be like that? I freeze them in lashinoh (sp) bags ussually 24 hours after I pump it (to make sure I don't need it). I have the equivalent of like 3 gallons in a deep freezer and hate to loose it, but even putting that milk in cereal and I got a terrible face from DD. I try to push all the air out of the bags, but there's always a little left.

Thoughts? Ideas? Any success with freezing?

Re: Nasty frozen BM?

some moms produce too much of a certaing enzyme or protein in their milk that makes it taste bad when frozen. I'll be right back with a link to a thread about that.

Could "soapy" be what you're tasting?

Re: Nasty frozen BM?

mine smells spoiled even after a week of being frozen....it sucks. i had forgotten about how it was like that with dd1 too...

too much lactase......

you need to scorch the milk before freezing (just before boiling)....

i havent done it yet bc i don't pump enough and if i tried to do just 6oz it would burn before anything else...

here's a great link about it....

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/l...essedmilk.html

my LC told me not use what i have for cereal but to mix it when i make baby food...with a sweet veggie bc it's not spoiled spoiled.....so maybe make some food and freeze that in turn????

It's too much lipase, not lactase. But yeah, it can make your milk taste "off" and you need to scald it before freezing.

I have never heard of scalding milk before freezing it! I honestly have 424 oz in the freezer. No, I didn't mistype, it's 424 oz. So the "off" milk can be mixed when I start making baby food? LIke with carrots and sweet peas?

from kelly mom : Once the milk becomes sour or rancid smelling/tasting, there is no known way to salvage it.

doh! Son of a biscuit! All that precious milk may have to go.
