Sewing diapers from recycled material....

I'm new to this sewing thing and I'm practicing like mad. I decided to make a diaper out of a old t-shirt of mine. Well, that just didn't work out at all. I It's HUGE! Big enough for me to use! I think it's because I had to stretch out the material when I was putting the elastic in. Then the elastic is just a waste, because it doesn't gather. Oh well...chalk it up as practice and get on with life huh?

Any ideas what I can use all of these T-shirts for? Maybe inserts?

Hmmm, elastic on t-shirt material should have gathered a bunch. Do you know how to sew it on? You tack it in place at the end, then stretch it as much as you can and 3 step zig zag it all the way down to the other end. There, you will release the tension and regular zig zag it back and forth in place to tack down that end as well. It should bunch up a lot! Practice does help. Before I started sewing diapers, I had no idea how to sew elastic, I had never done it before! You just stretch the elastic with your hand, NOT the material. Let the machine feed the material through, YKWIM? Are you using a pattern?

I'm using a pattern my sis made off of a disposible....I'm in the process of getting a HoneyBoy pattern. It looks like just what I need.

I didn't sew the elastic on there correctly. I need to practice for sure. Thanks for your help! I'll keep you informed!

I have made a bunch of diapers from old t'shirts. I T&T mine, attaching the elastic at both ends and then blind stitching a little casing for it. That seems to work out well, although it takes longer.

If the fitteds don't work out for you, you could always make boosters or doublers, or just big square diapers to tri-fold inside your cover.

Thanks Mommas....My buddy and I are planning on having a all day sewing fest this Saturday. She's due in Sept, and we are planning on using some clothes we got from Freecycle. I'll let you know how it goes. We are both VERY excited to Stitch and .... well....fuss.
