Re: Cystic Fibrosis Test done, results

That's weird because it is a test that you elect to have done (like the extended downs testing). It is just to see if you are a carrier. Even if you are one (and the test only detects up to 60%) it does not mean your children will have it, just that you could pass on the carrier gene to them.

Re: Cystic Fibrosis Test done, results

mama. I have known many people with CF, I almost married one of them a number of years ago. I had the test done with my first pregnancy and I told DH that I wouldn't have been surprised to find out that I was a carrier, since I knew so much and was prepared to live with someone with the disease, kwim? I hope your Dh isn't a carrier and your mind can be set at ease.

wow i think this test was done on my with my prenatal blood work... without my permission! Im not a carrier, but i thought it was one of the things they check for when you first get pregnant, such as anemia, blood sugar, rubella immunity, etc..

Thanks for sharing this mama, and im so sorry you're stressed out!!

more and more docs are pushing to have it done.

it really needs to be a routine part of prenatal or infant screens...

if you ever have had to live with someone with the disease, its so much easier and better if you can catch it early.

my poor lo lived with it for 3 years and no one knew...i can only imagine the pain he was in and didnt know he wasnt sup to feel

Re: Cystic Fibrosis Test done, results

Oh I'm glad they did do it, cause at least now I can let my children know when they get ready to have kids etc, that they may be carriers to.... At least they wont be blind sided how I was....

I'm glad DS is totally healthy nothing has ever gone wrong with him, knock on wood.. He is a healthy breastfed baby boy... No issues what so ever...

I am not stressing, just was shocked that I never got tested for it before, and I know I would have gotten tested before if they had asked cause I was the type of #1 pregnancy mom that wanted to be prepared for everything.... Maybe that practice just did not test yet???

I am sure things will be fine... Even if they are not, my family can deal with it...

I have only met 1 person in my whole life that has CF and he went to high school with me... Most people did or do not know he even has it, but you can tell from the coughing... I think just from that being so rare, we have less of a chance of having issues... I feel for the families that do have issues with it, its a very scarey disease....

Thanks for all the info.. I had to educate DH about it, cause he was shocked to hear about it... And was like "what they did not test us for DS" what the heck.. But he understands now...

My OB is a HUGE advocate of the CF testing.

Fingers crossed your husband does not have the gene!!!

Re: Cystic Fibrosis Test done, results

I was tested with DD as a part of my prenatal bloodwork. I don't even remembering them asking me if I wanted to be tested or not. They just told me I wasn't a carrier at the next appointment and remember to tell any other OBs I have if I have another child. Its strange that they didn't at least offer it last time.
