BF after 4 months of bottle?

My 3 and a half month old nephew is having a lot of problems with formula. He just throws up most of what he eats and is getting really skinny. He has lost way too much weight. They have tried EVERYTHING. Now he is on soy formula. My sister in law wants me to try nursing him and see if breast milk would do any better. Since she is ready to go back to work she said it would be good if I could just nurse him along with my 4 month old durring the day. I am supposed to try tomorrow. Any advice for getting him to latch on? Is it really even possible? I just want to give him the best. I have an over supply so I don't mind at all, I'm just not sure if he'll take it. (although I could just pump and bottle feed him, it would be much easier if he would latch on,) Thanks!

I guess if he had a hard time latching you could start w/ a nipple shield b/c it might feel more like a bottle nipple.

sounds like he has reflux.....have your SIL switch him to enfamil lipil AR....or the cheap way is to add a teaspoon of rice cereal to every 2oz bottle he drinks (but this requires cutting the nipple).

good luck with trying to get him to latch!

no advice, but I think you are super for being willing to help them in this way. Is she willing to try and re-lactate if it works? It's a HUGE commitment for you to nurse both the babes...

i think a nipple shield would probably help as well if he wont latch without - either way it will probably take some practice GL!

My ds came back to breast at age 3.5mos so it can be done. I needed to be pretty full, though, so he got the immediate gratification like with the bottle. I pump and give him with a bottle too cause there are still times he's just not patient enough. GL.

Good luck! It's definitely doable. DD was in the NICU for 7 weeks and was bottlefed for the last 2 of those weeks. She was then bottlefed for about a month after coming home (my expressed BM). It took a while but after a lot of patience and a lot of pumping she did it!
