Re: Help me get rid of mastitis!!!

Everything I've just googled says you need antibiotic treatment for this... I would highly suggest you to call your nearest LC or LLL to get more information on this. I was told if I didn't take the antibiotics, to pump and dump until the fevers pass, but I could resume bfing if I chose to take the antibiotics. (which I did)... I suppose it's possible my LCs goofed with this information, but everything they have told me thus far has kept us going this long and I fully trust what they tell me.. I wouldn't take anyones word on this, I would just call for yourself and see what they tell you.. Remember, they are the experts on this, this is their specialty.. Good luck mama!

Re: Help me get rid of mastitis!!!

This was taken from the kellymom site
When you have mastitis...

Talk to your DR about starting
antibiotics immediately if:

Mastitis is in both breasts.
Baby is less than 2 weeks old, or
you have recently been in the hospital.
You have broken skin on the nipple
with obvious signs of infection.
Blood/pus is present in milk.
Red streaking is present.
Your temperature increases suddenly.
Symptoms are sudden and severe.

What I'm not finding on any of these sites though, is if you choose to NOT take the meds, you should pump until the fever/infection passes as to not pass infection to the baby... We all know the best treatment for plugged ducts is to keep it empty, nurse as much as possible.. but in a case like I had, without the antibiotics, I could have done more harm to him doing so.. I would think in a mild case, that last less than 24 hrs, you could get away with holistic approaches... Mine was going on 2 days and I had the blood/pus developing.. Without treatment, I just don't think babies drinking pus is healthy...

Re: Help me get rid of mastitis!!!

Thanks for all the advice Mamas...

I talked to my LC and she had the Dr. call in a prescription for me. I haven't had a fever now in almost 48 hours.. so I'm gonna wait another day and see how I feel. But I will have the antibiotics just in case..

Side note: Anyone else really sick of these annoying pop up ads that keep coming up?? UGH!!!

Re: Help me get rid of mastitis!!!

Mastitis is the worst. I had it 3 times and only took antibiotics once. The rest of the times I caught it early and rest, water and constant nursing helped.

Feel better!

And I agree with the pp. Firefox is the best for popup blockers!
