Finding a place to pump s@cks

I am a RN on a very busy unit and sadly I think I am the first person to actually pump at work. I work only once a week to help out the unit so I guess it shouldn't be that big a deal but I struggle to find both time and a place to pump!!! Has anyone approached thier work place to establish an actual designated place for employees to pump. I am 1000% committed to ebm for my lo so I will find a place to pump but I wonder how many other mamas would.

Thoughts??

There was a pumping room where I worked off the peds ICU and one for the NICU. It was initially provided for moms of patients but staff used it too.

Re: Finding a place to pump s@cks

I am an RN as well, the maternity unit had a place for moms to pump, and opened it up to employees as well, I also work at a university hospital and they had a spot in the nursery, and the crying babies really helped let down! Good luck!

La Leche's site has a bunch of info on approaching the workplace for a proper pumping place.

I cant believe a hosp doesnt have one!

You absolutely can and should ask for the time and a place to pump. When I worked at a hospital, there were consultation rooms on each floor, I imagine you could use one of those to pump in and the charge nurse needs to block out time during the shift for you to do it.

Re: Finding a place to pump s@cks

i work at a nursing home as a cna, but finding time to pump is a pain in the ***, i get 1 half hour break and 1 10 min break a shift (8 hours) so i eat and pump during the first break, but i don't have a 'private' place to pump, i use a multi-office, which is only used by a few other people at night,

we don't have a maternity or ped/nicu unit at my hospital-its a small community hospital- I do use the dictation room but my boss kind of made it clear she would rather I didn't in case a doc needed it

Hmmmm...doesn't sound like your boss is terribly supportive...grrrrr....Is there an overnight room in the hospital where docs sleep who are on-call?? I'm guessing you would run into the same bs from you boss, but I can't see a doc sleeping in there during the day??

Hope you can find a good advocate(s) to stand by you. The hospital should be one of the first places to provide that

I would second the on call room if there is one. If not continue to use the dictation room. Chances are the doctors would give you a few minutes to pump if they needed that room and it only takes 10-15 minutes to get most of what you need anyway. I would ask for a designated place or just take one.

Re: Finding a place to pump s@cks

My bosses said I could go to another office building that had a lactation room in it (10 minutes away)or drive home (15 minutes away). So I just got an adaptor for my car and I pump in the parking lot. So far it works just fine and I get my privacy by using sun shades.
