breastfeeding in public

okay so i am great at breastfeeding here at home with my almost 2 week old (2 weeks tomorrow) however i am super dependent on a pillow or boppy. how do you nurse in public? she likes the football hold for the left breast and cradle for the right breast.

Feel free to bring pillow or boppy with you wherever! There is no nursing code when it comes to accessories or how you do. Do what works for you and be proud mama. If you are looking to lose the pillow, I'd just start practicing without it at home... When NIP (nursing in public) you could bunch up a blanket or something, because those can at least be folded down when you're moving, not like lugging a big pillow. I really didn't use the football hold, it might be a bit harder without your pillow.. maybe just stick to the other side when out? I'll be interested to see what advice some of the other mama's post.

I sit cross-legged (indian-style, criss-cross-applesauce, whatever you call it) with the knee on the side he's nursing on on top. When he was tiny, I had to find a chair with arms so that I could prop my arm up and nurse. Also, I found that putting my diaper bag under my arm to prop it helped alot.

modest NIP is really hard until they are better at nursing themselves. i bet you'll be a champ once your babe is 4, 5 or 6 weeks old. once they have a great latch and decent head control it gets WAY easier. you can loosen up on positioning and such, and they aren't as particular. keep it up!

If you take a blanket or something with you in case you need to change her or something - fold that up and put it under your arm. I second using the diaper bag or anything else that's semi-fluffy that you could prop your arm up with.

Using your diaper bag and then filling in w/ a blanket is good. Also, realize it takes a while to be able to do it w/o flashing everyone. I started by covering myself or all would be exposed. Now I can have DS latched on in about 3 secs and no one can see a thing. But, it took me a while! Way to go for wanting to NIP!!

I have a great cover that a friend made me, it looks pretty much like the hooter hider and is my saving grace when in public! I always sit criss-cross applesauce.

I also use my leg. Either that or I look for a chair with an arm rest. It does get easier.

i had her in her sling nursing in a custom-football type hold and spent the time wandering around the mall and target. the sling helped hold her bottom so i only had to worry about keeping hold of her head.

holy cow, does thinking about nursing make anyone else's milk let down, or is it just me?!

I took my pillow along with me when my first and second ones were teensy. My Breast Friend has an inflatable nursing pillow for travelling! I always just found something to prop Baby up, like others have suggested: the diaper bag, crossed legs, etc.
