Treating allergies/hayfever while pregnant?

I haven't been pregnant for a summer before...am wondering how to deal my allergies/hayfever?

Last year I had great results with a homeopathic remedy, which was safe while b/f, but I'm not sure if I can take it while pregnant.

Any suggestions?

Does anybody know if the non-drowsy or regular antihistamines are better for the baby?

I dont think it matters as long as you are using a "pregnancy safe" medication.

Benadryl knocks me out......so I dont like to take it. Claritin doesnt make you tired thats why I prefer it.

Re: Treating allergies/hayfever while pregnant?

i was going to suggest like the pp benadryl...i get hayfeaver really bad, and what i do is take two tylenol and put a damp rag over my eyes and lay in a silent dark room...usually i feel better in a couple hours...but now i think i'd have to go for the benadryl b/c there is no way my kids would leave me alone for two hours...lol

Re: Treating allergies/hayfever while pregnant?

Thought you all might be interested to know that I called our Telehealth service and they said that only the older, "drowsy" antihistamines have been "proven to not increase risk to the fetus". Apparently, only a few small studies have been done on Claritin, Allegra, etc., not enough for them to be officially labeled safe.

So I guess I'll be toughing it out...LOL Benedryl knocks me completely out and there's no way in the world I could keep up with the boys in that condition!

Re: Treating allergies/hayfever while pregnant?

My ob was super cautious about medications, the only one OK was chlortrimeton, she said no benedryl & definately none of the newer allergy medicines. Chlortrimeton didn't make me as drowsy as benedryl, but still not great.

Other things that helped me if it was bad was taking a steamy shower (clears nose, eyes, lungs) , using the vick's vaporizer (the one with the face mask - clears nose & lungs), or (this takes some guts), inhaling warm salted water thru my nose (spit it out your mouth) - get the pollen out of your nose. Neti pots are supposed to be good too!

I also used breath right strips at night, they helped the stuffy nose.

I'm allergic to everything - grass, weeds, trees, dust & mold, so I'm fighting it year round

Re: Treating allergies/hayfever while pregnant?

I was told I could take clarin D for my allergies but what I found was that it majorly suppressed my appetite and gave me the shakes so don't take that for sure!
