anti-depressants and breastfeeding

Is it ok to take anti-depressants while breastfeeding? I take zoloft. It really is neccisarry for me to function as I suffer from chronic depression. I would like to know how this will affect breastfeeding.

Re: anti-depressants and breastfeeding

It is okay to take some anti-depressants and BF. Double check w/ doc about which ones. I took a combo of wellbutrin and prozac and my babies had no problems. Also if it becomes a choice, go for the meds. No baby is gonna be harmed from formula. But the emotional scars from an unhappy momma can last. For you and baby. Whatever you decide, it is YOUR choice and it will be the right one for YOU. Take this from someone who has been there. If you want to talk more or need more info, please PM me. Seriously. I'll be glad to help you out.

I take 50mg of zoloft and OB, my pediatrician, and my psychologist are all OK with it.

That is the same dose I take. And I was also thinking if it was a choice I would have to keep the meds. I get tired of people telling me I don't really need them. They don't understand that I really SUFFER from depression. I really do want to breastfeed too, I did before but I wasn't on meds then so it wasn't an issue. Thanks for the responses.

Re: anti-depressants and breastfeeding

Ask your doc, but also do your own research. Zoloft has been found to have minimal crossover to breastmilk in some women, and *no* discernible crossover in others. Also, the quantity that has been found, was comparatively (by body weight) much lower than the mother gets.

Here's what I do. I take my Zoloft when I know it will be at least several hours until I breastfeed again. The half-life (the amount of time it takes for half the drug to be in your system) is VERY short with Zoloft. So even a few hours will make a huge difference. So...I breastfeed or pump at about midnight, then take the Zoloft, and then Evan doesn't eat again until 7:00.

Re: anti-depressants and breastfeeding

I did a bit of checking on this, as I needed to be on Prozac while I was pregnant and my doctor didn't want me to go off the meds. The pediatrician said that Prozac is ok, but Zoloft is even better, so I switched to that. So I really wouldn't worry about it, it's considered the safest anti-depressant when breastfeeding.

I only take 25 mg of Zoloft, but we haven't had any problems. I had much more problems when I drank caffeine. Zoloft is the number one choice of antidepressants for BF moms. Here's a site with some more info
