I'm expecting twins!!

Ok, I know both of them will be wonderful, but honestly - "oh crap" is what I feel like now. Same goes for hubby.

DS screamed the first 4 months, be got no sleep and bf'ing was painful in the beginning and I had supply issues. Now - 2 of them!!!

Yes I know every baby is different and maybe these 2 will eat in 5 minutes and only every 5 hours and sleep through the night right from the get go, but all I can think of is

- twins will keep you up twice as much as a single baby
- twins will eat twice as long (and prevent me from sleeping)
- twins will require twice the attention which is all away from our DS
- we'll have 3 car seats in the car!!
- 2-3 high chairs
- twins are likely to be C-sectioned
- twins are likely to be preemies
- how will my milk be enough for the 2

In summary - Oh crap.

Re: I'm expecting twins!!

Oh, momma. I remember those feelings so well. To be honest, it is hard. It's really, really hard. But, it's so worth it. Mine will be 2 in a week, and I can't believe that the time has gone by so fast. It has been a roller coaster of a ride, but we've loved every minute. Give yourself some time to adjust, and before long you'll forget about all of your worries. My DS was 2 when the twins were born, and now he thinks that all babies come in twos. LOL

If you have any specific questions about anything, pm me. I'll do my best to answer.

Re: I'm expecting twins!!

Okay, when I found out we were having twins, I cried, literally. By the time it was done I think every nurse in the place was coming in to the exam room to tell me it was going to be okay. It is actually much, much, much better than okay. It's pretty cool.

You can feed them both at the same time. They tend to sleep at the same time. And feeding them both at the same time and pumping in between feedings early on will help keep your supply up. The hardest part of having twins, for me, was the fact that we couldn't run to the store for bread without 20 people stopping me to talk about twins. Get familiar with the following: (My DH got so tired of these, he came up with crazy answers, which I went ahead and included, for your amusement/horror. I was always mortified.)

"Are they twins?" (No, their triplets. We left the other one in the car.)
"Are they identical?" (Did you even look before you asked that?)
"Are they natural?" (No, they're a poly/cotton blend)
"Do twins run in your family?" (No, they're not even walking yet. OR Yep, they walk, run, sit, stand, pretty much everything you'd expect.)
"Can I hold one?" (NO!!!!)
"Wow, do you have your hands full!" (Yep, we're lucky!)

Re: I'm expecting twins!!

Twins are more work than a singleton but just remember this..

You'll also have
twice the hugs
twice the kisses
twice the love
twice the smiles
twice the laughs
twice the joy
and twice the fun.

When you watch them playing with one another and looking out for one another and hear them babbling at each other all the other stuff will seem like a distant fog. Anything in life worth doing is going to be hard. And don't resign yourself to bottles and c-sections just yet. Lots of twin moms have vaginal deliveries, healthy term babies and breastfeed. My twins were c-section only because they were both breech but I got through it. They were born at 35 weeks and were very healthy. They spent no time in the NICU and they are 15 mos old now and just weaned from the breast last month. It's going to be fine. Congratulations!

Re: I'm expecting twins!!

Thank you all

We try to think of the positives too. It is all just very overwhelming. We live very far from both of our families and just recently moved to a new town where we only now starting to make some friends. So the support network is practically none existent. Scary. We are thinking of flying our retired moms here for the summer (the babies are due August 10th but likely to be born in July)...or maybe we'll find some hired help. It all just sound very hard.

Maybe I'll have more questions as this all really sinks in and we are not so freaked out anymore. Thank for offering help

I have to share these with the twins boards I post too!

To Tad - your fears will change as the PG progresses, and while it's overwhelming now...it's fun too! My twins are technically due in April, but I know they will be here in March.

Congrats!!

Re: I'm expecting twins!!

You can do it Mama! My identical twin boys turned 2 on Monday! I nursed them for 18 months until they self weaned. In the beginning when they're small it was easier for me to nurse them 1 at a time, but once they got a bit bigger I was able to nurse them together and that cut down on feeding time. We also did a lot of co sleeping and I would just turn from one side to the other to feed the next in line. You really can do it! Just nurse on demand and in the early days when they're preemies you may need to wake them to feed them. Ours wouldn't wake on their own to nurse for a while....they were soooo sleepy! In the beginning if they weren't in bed with us we had a pack n play with the bassinet in it and it was at the end of our bed. That worked out very well. Honestly we didn't need cribs until they were about 7 months old. You could really hold off on cribs, high chairs and probably some other things for a while. Congrats!

Re: I'm expecting twins!!

Okay, just chill, let me give you a good experience with twins.

Mine were born early yes, 34 wks.
Minimal NICU time, 2 weeks.
SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT at 8 weeks old.
Easiest babies ever! They were like little couch potatoes Nothing compared to my third daughter.... EEK.
Potty trained at 2.5, DAY and NIGHT trained by 3 with minimal help from me
Quiet, helpful little girls
Everyone says they're the most kind hearted little girls... rarely put up a fuss

So, it's not all lost. GL and Congradulations, Mama!!!
