PLS learn from my mistake - scary story - happy ending

I am posting what happened this afternoon in hopes that this will help someone else to learn from my mistake and save them from going thru this. There is an ok ending.
I was NAK'ing this afternoon and my almost 1 yo got fussy and wanted down. My computer is upstairs - we never take the baby up there because we have no railing and outside of the computer room there is a balcony leading to the stairs overlooking the livingroom - yes that's where the story is going.
I set him down knowing for certain that the door was closed. He played with a toy happily. I turned my back for a couple of seconds...the sound of the thud
I'm not sure that I will ever forget that sound.
We went by ambulance to the city. He had a bloody nose, and was very quiet. They checked him out and somehow his only injury is a bloody nose, a small cut on his tongue from his teeth and a fat lip. He fell over 10 feet.
DH says he forgives me.....I'll never forgive me. I'm not looking for forgiveness, I'm not even close to done punishing myself yet. Somehow - I don't know who or what was looking over him today - 2 inches to the right and he would have landed on a wooden crate, 2 inches the other way it would have been a large speaker.
We're watching him closely tonight - The Doctor's assure us that he's ok. We are so lucky - I can't close my eyes without seeing all the possibilities of what could have happened.
I don't want support, on the other hand having a mama irate with me is probably what I'm looking for - but might just tip me over the edge. I just want our scare to help someone else to keep their baby safe - obviously we have learnt from this - and it WILL NEVER happen again - but I hope that I could help someone else from ever feeling this horrendous. We came so close to losing him. DH says he forgives me and accidents happen - but they shouldn't. Thanks for listening - don't take your eyes off of those precious little ones.

Mama, I am so happy that your LO is okay. Accidents happen and thank God nothing horrible happened from this one. Accept it as a lesson learned and go from there.

Oh mama it happens to everyone. You think you'll be ok turning for ONE SECOND, and something happens. You CAN'T watch them every second, you just can't do it. (you have to pee sometime!). I'm glad the LO is ok, and don't beat yourelf up.

I've had something very similar happen with one of my own, it makes you feel liek you are the most awful person I know! I had a straight panic attack with what happened with us and shut down for a few days. You will move on and you have learned!
