sore breast?
On Sat. my left breast was very sore, tender feeling even after I pumped (I pump exclusively). That night I woke up w/chills, a splitting headache and a slight fever of 99.1-101.2 (depending on which therometer you trust). I also had a slight fever yesterday. And today I still have a terribel headache and part of my breast feels hard and lumpy even after I pump for a long time.
What could be wrong and what should I do about it? TIA for any help.

Re: sore breast?
Could be a plugged duct, which I get. I just nurse nurse nurse off that side and do warm compresses and drink drink drink water! The one time I didn't drink enough I ended up with mastitis.
Try hand expessing a bit in a very warm shower and massage the hard sore lumpy part to try and get it unplugged.

Re: sore breast?
I don't think it's a plugged duct because that usually comes with just pain, chills and fever are key signs for infection so it sounds like you already have mastitis. Mastitis doesn't always require antibiotics, but it might, so I'd get it checked out as soon as you can. Visit this site:

Re: sore breast?
It sounds like you're healing from mastitis. My breasts were always hard and lumpy (and itchy, even) in the areas that were healing.

Re: sore breast?
Sorry mama... sounds like mastitis. I would get to the doc and I think they usually prescribe antibiotics. Take care.

Oh, I forgot to mention to cut up and swallow as much fresh, raw garlic as you can. This was the only thing that kept me from having to take antibiotics time after time.

Re: sore breast?
So, my achiness and fever meant it was most likely mastitis? Glad what I did worked, but I have had this happen to me like 4 times in the last 6 or so months. To the OP, I feel your pain! I end up with hot red areas and so far haven't needed the docs, but if it doesn't clear up you can end up dehydrated and feeling way worse. I had full on horrible, fever of 103 mastitis with my first, and you want to try and get it handled before it gets to that. Drink drink drink lots of water!
