Gestational Diabetes the Second Time Around...

Ok some quick back story- I have PCOS so am considered borderline diabetic. When I got pregnant with my DS 2 years ago, I was on a medical that can't be used through pregnancy, so I got off it at 12 weeks and developed gestational diabetes and was eventually insulin dependent. My OB had me to go a perinotalogist (sp) for the last 5 months for all the extra ultrasounds and stress tests.

After my son was born, I started seeing an endocrinologist and have been on metformin for about 6 months now. He knows that I was trying to get pregnant, and we have talked about me staying on metformin the entire pregnancy since it's a category B. He said that it should help me control my sugars without having to do the shots.

So I got my BFP yesterday, and I called the endo to let them know. They told me to start testing my sugars 4 times a day and to come in tomorrow for lab work. I want to change OB's this time around since I didn't like her much or the peri that she worked with...So I am trying to get an appointment with someone.

My question is- would my new OB work with my endo throughout the pregnancy or do you have to see a perinatologist? I love my endo and I don't want to give him up, because I KNOW that he would go to bat with me over trying the meds in pill form over shots and such..

Does anyone have experience with this?

Best thing to do is ask the new dr if they would work with them or not. I am sure they would since you have seen them before you got BFP, btw CONGRATS!
I switched dr because I didnt like the last one when I had DD. They seem to be great and have me in mind then just another person kwim? So if you can find a dr like that they will most likely work with them.

Re: Gestational Diabetes the Second Time Around...

Some obs won't send you to a peri, but some do. If you were already diabetic before pregnancy.. the peri will most likely label you Type 2 Diabetic.

I know that lots of info being passed around on Metform says NOT to use in pregnancy as it crosses the placenta. When you are on insulin.. it is usually shots as that does not cross the placenta but the pills do. That is why they want you to take shots. It is better for baby, since baby isn't the one that is diabetic so doesn't need extra insulin. Does that make sense? Anyway... a peri probably won't work with your Endo as the OB is responsible for your baby's health and yours. They can be sued, so they want to make all of the decisions. I am sure they will let you fax your medical records from him though. I know that obs like it if you ONLY use them as your primary doctor during pregnancy. A high risk ob is even worse about that rule unless they need to send you to another specialist.

Good Luck! I would definitely find an ob that you like and avoid the one that you didn't. Do it now before you get too far along!
