how long do you put them over the potty before giving up?

So far I've only been able to have DS pee immediately after waking from a nap. TOday I tried it about 10 minutes after nursing. I sat with him over the tub for about 5 minutes and he started fussing so I put on a dipe. He then ended up peeing in the dipe about 15 minutes later. How long do you sit with them waiting? I havent been able to pick up on any cues from him so it is all a guessing game (except when he gets up from a nap)Thanks!

Re: how long do you put them over the potty before giving up?

when we started, when dd was little, i tried to put her on at 'predictable' times and watch for 'signs' that she had to go! but i do know that she has always pooped in the morning, so in that case, sometimes, i let her sit at her 'leisure' and relax and read a few books! but i would say, if you put him on and he doesn't go, take him off and just keep watching him for signs!

Re: how long do you put them over the potty before giving up?

Since you are just starting, I found it helpful to write down when she would go, even when we'd miss. Like, my DD doesnt need to go after waking, but immediately after nursing, and one hour later she does. But it took me several days of observation to note that, and we would have done way better if I had written it down.

But yeah, I will wait as long as she is happy. Anytime she acted fussy, or like she didnt want to be there, we went about our business.

Re: how long do you put them over the potty before giving up?

as long as they are happy. if any objection, take him off right away and try again in 5 mins.

when it was going good, my DD took 3 mins tops including pants on and off.(5 mins for poop but I'd know she's working on something) These days, she sometimes sits there for 5 mins with no result..

I think once your DS is used to being pottied all the time he'll catch on and be quicker.

my schedule (from what I hear it's pretty common one) is:

5 mins after eating. then 10 mins then try every 30-45mins
right away after sleeping. 5 mins after.again in 15 mins if it was a long nap. then every 30-45 mins.

they hold better in the afternoon (2-3 hrs) so my Dd is on the potty pretty much all morning. LOL

I just wanted to add that wearing your baby in a sling can help you pick up on their cues. In the morning I like to wear DD in my ring sling in between pottying; she starts squirming and fussing when she needs to go and will pee almost immediately after being sat on the potty.

This is interesting..I will definately try this. I'm going to start writing down times too. I just use a fitted or prefold usually without wool while at home so I can tell when he does a pee. It will be easy to keep track.
Thanks for the useful info!!

When I first started w/ DS, I asked the mama who first told me about EC- she told me that you really don't want to leave them on for too long b/c you want them to learn to accociate the potty with elimination. I would saw that no longer than 15 or 20min after eating (and they *should* go in that amount of time anyhow) But lay your LO down on a water proof mat w/o a dipe and just watch to see what they do- usually right before they eliminate they will pause what they are doing, even if only for just a split second. DD dos it EVERY time. It can take a while to learn the cues, but be patients, you'll catch on and learn your LO *cycle*

Great. I'm going to try this and see. I have this huge waterproof mat type thing that has been sitting in my closet for forever. Finally I have a use for it. Today was a off day. I only caught one pee.

Re: how long do you put them over the potty before giving up?

Something I've heard is that if you see them go or going take them to the potty even if they finished, it helps reenforce that peeing is for potty. I found that often my LO might be a little bit but then if I did put her on the potty she'd pee more.

I let him tell me if he is sick of sitting on there. He will start fussing or crying if I've tried too long with him.
