Help Please--Refusing breastmilk?
My ds got a stomach virus and had vomiting and diarrhea on Tuesday and con't to have loose stools now. Since then, he is refusing bm from a cup or bottle. He nurses only once a day at this point, and he gets pumped milk at naps and at bedtime. Well, he nursed and nursed and nursed Wednesday morning but then refused bottles of bm at nap and bedtime, which I attributed to him being sick still. Again he nursed on Thursday morning fairly well and refused any other milk all day. Same on Friday. Today he nursed and took a little milk before naps (3oz and 1oz, respectively). Now, he's thirsty and is refusing to drink my milk. I've offered it at all temperatures and out of a cup and bottle, and he will take a sip and scream. I finally caved and gave him a little juice and he drank like he was thirsting to death.
I'm really at a loss as to what to do. Do I just assume this is still part of him not feeling well or do I assume he doesn't like my milk? I tasted it and it tastes fine. ETA: My ds is 11mos

Re: Help Please--Refusing breastmilk?
Have you offered to let him nurse at these times? Maybe that is what he wants?

Re: Help Please--Refusing breastmilk?
I have tried to let him nurse, but although he screams and claws at my boobs, he will turn away when I pull one out for him. IDK. I did finally get him to take 6oz tonight at bedtime. I am really thinking it's just been his tummy bothering him, but I know he neeeeeeeds this milk to help him get better. I am kind of hoping he'll wake up in the middle of the night cause he'll always nurse then.

Re: Help Please--Refusing breastmilk?
Have you tried pedilyte? My littles always did well with that when they were sick and it helped them from getting too dehydrated. The BM is good, but it might be stuffing him up a little more than he likes. Have you tried sucking out the nose before trying to get him to drink?

Re: Help Please--Refusing breastmilk?
He'll take the pedialyte fine too. It's strictly the bm he's refusing. I think it is the tummy still. I'm just going to keep on pumping and let him nurse when he wants, and I'm sure he'll pick it back up eventually. He has always loved his mommy milk. Thanks.

Re: Help Please--Refusing breastmilk?
IF he nurses well in the middl eof the night I would wake him up just for tonight, it won't start anything bad and he could use the calories and immunities.
Breast babies never really need pedialite, breastmilk is much easier to digest and better for them. HOpe he is back to normal soon!

Re: Help Please--Refusing breastmilk?
Sometimes my DS when he was sick, only wanted water because the hind milk is thick and made him cough and it got kinda stuck in the mucas in the back of his throat. (we are dealing with that now)
