Do you re-use pumped milk if LO does not finish it?

I saw someone reference this in another thread recently and I couldn't find a specific answer on the LLL website. So I'm wondering if you would re-use milk from a bottle that your LO did not finish. If so, how long could it sit out before being re-refrigerated? How long would you keep it in the fridge before using it up? And would you ever freeze it?

I try not to let it sit for more then an hour although Im pretty sure brest milk is good sitting out for about 4 hours. I then usually try using it within 36 hours and then I just toss it. I never have frozen it after using some of it.

I don't let it sit out more than 1hr, and I will reuse within 24hrs. I'm not about to waste my precious liquid gold.

I've come home from work early and found that DS still had half a bottle or so of pumped breastmilk left to drink. My rule for DH is to immediately put it back in the refrigerator. We then make sure to use it at his next feeding (I let him finish that bottle, then nurse from me to finish his meal. Then, I pump the amount that he had left in the bottle so that there are no supply issues). I think the longest it's sat in the fridge in this situation is about 4 hours.

I would never refreeze it.

what about heating/reheating it...my instructions for DH is to warm under running water...so if LO doesn't drink it all and it goes back in the fridge...is it ok to reheat again?

I would let it sit out 4 hours... Keep it in the fridge for a week and I would freeze it. I would never REfreeze it, but you can certainly freeze it. However, come donor milk Ive gotten has been partially unfrozen and I did refreeze that.

I would never heat in the microwave.. Just heat under warm water and I would reheat it also.

IMO as an EPer, pumped milk is too precious to waste... Use every last drop that you can.

Re: Do you re-use pumped milk if LO does not finish it?

Both Kellymom and LLL state that it is okay to re-offer the leftover milk at the next feeding. I cannot locate a link that states an exact period of time.

Personally, I would refrigerate promptly (not freeze) and re-offer within 24 hours. I would only do this with fresh or refrigerated milk, not frozen. Freezing kills some of the antibacterial properties. Reheating should not be a problem. Also, this only applies to a healthy, full-term baby. There are more stringent guidelines for hospitalized babies.

I think this is a helpful info. card on handling expressed milk.

From LLL
http://www.llli.org/llleaderweb/LV/LVDecJan06p123.html :
"Mothers might want to discuss with their baby's health care provider whether they feel comfortable with reheating a bottle that was not finished during a feeding, and then share their decision with the baby's caregiver. In her book, Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession, Dr. Ruth Lawrence states that "Breast milk may safely stand at room temperature for six to eight hours, and need not be discarded if the first feeding attempt is incomplete" (Lawrence 2005). Another study showed that if a bottle is reheated one time within four hours of the first feeding, there is no appreciable bacterial growth and the milk is still safe to feed (Brusseau 1998)."
