Can you use kool aid and vineagar to dye prefolds?

it would color but eventually all wash out

Don't bother. It will just wash out. You might get a light coloring (like a stain) but it won't be as pretty as you want it.
Go to wal-mart and get some of the rainbow rock dyes there or dharmatrading.com

How much are rainbow rock dyes? Can you use washing soda instead of ash soda?

RR kits at Walmart are $10 & $20. I think it's a better deal to get 2 of the $10 kits, you'll get 6 colors. The $20 kit only has 5 colors, if I'm remembering correctly.
