Carseat Expiration question

Say I have a brand new, in box, Britax carseat that was manufactured in 2004. Does it expire ___ years after the manufacture date or the date you start to use it... and why?

Call Britax and ask them. They can give the best specifics.

It is b/c plastics deteriorates over a given amount of time and weaken significantly, causing the LO to be in danger.

Re: Carseat Expiration question

The Pro's will tell you 6 years or less, depending on climate. However, it is best to use your judgement.

I bought a 1999 Maxi-Cosi brand new in 2006...because they were no longer imported. I love this seat. I stored it inside my closet...air conditioned etc.

I have pounced on the seat...looking for any cracking or deterioration...finding none.

Pretty much...it is up to you.

Hard-core carseat advocates will say 6 years no matter what....

But, the only proof is a video from a carseat that I assume was weathered that broke apart on impact. I haven't seen any "proof" of well stored "new" carseats that have older man. dates.

On that note: I have two Britax/fisher price safe voyage boosters for my 7 and 8 year olds...with the backs still on. One Britax starriser comfy booster and one Sunshine kids radian for my 5.5 year old. One Britax Regent from my 30 pound 3' tall 2 year old. And, One Britax companion and Britax Roundabout for my 3 month old.

Note: I still have the 1999 Maxi-cosi in my air-conditioned laundry room.

Good luck!

The expiration date should be on the car seat, and it is 6 years from manufacture date. The plastic starts to wear down even if the seat is not in use.

All I can say is if I paid that much for a carseat and it arrived to me four years old I would be pretty po'd. I know not what you asked but still I had to say it.

6 years after the DOM!

I WOULD NOT use it after those 6years no matter what! Especially a 1999 carseat no matter what climate it was in!

Here is a video of a 10yr old Carseat, plastic breaks letting the harness come free! I will gladly buy new seats every 6years, my kids safety is more important.

ITA with Diana I would NEVER use a carseat past its expiration date. I will not be the one to uise my child as a crash test dummy.

I found a brand new Britax on CL, but it was manufactured in 2004. She wants 130 for it. Worth it?
