Re: Banning Scammers

Is there a way to tell who is on dial up and who is not on dial up?

You can usually tell by looking in the admin control panel but some are not obvious....I found that out the hard way when I banned some innocent mama

Re: Banning Scammers

Kim, dude. Enough about MM already.

AOL IP's are tricky to ban because hundreds of users can share the same IP, and they're always changing. I've been Admin on several different message boards, and have also had the unfortunate experience of accidently banning someone because their IP was the same as the person that should be banned. So, especially on a board of this size, it's not always as easy as looking up an IP addy, and banning it.

Dude. I was asking a question, both boards are Vbulletin so I was just saying that there is a way. Had I said MDC or DT or something would that have been better....???? And Cowmommy answered my questions just fine, thank you. So now DS members are allowed to tell me what I can and can not say...

Re: Banning Scammers

My DH did his best to explain this to me - because I can't learn - he may have to explain this at some point again...

We use Charter and he said he thinks Charter assigns random I.P. addresses to residences (maybe even daily) so a residence can't host a web server - ? (I might not be quoting his explanation verbatim, but I am trying.)

If I were a business hosting my own sever then I would have the same I.P. address always - Or so this is how I understand it...

So lucky scammer!

Re: Banning Scammers

Another thing w/ IPs is that there are lots of people who get on DS at work, and there are also lots of companies where every single end-user terminal in the whole company has the same IP b/c of how their network is set up. One troublemaker banned by IP that way could potentially affect many MANY more innocent users.

Re: Banning Scammers

Yeah, and it would be pretty much impossible to ban, say an AOL user via IP because it's different every time you log in. And I use a sprint mobile device, which is also a different IP addy depending on where I'm using it from (it's basically a cell phone that calls the internet). So, sometimes it's hard to ban based on IPs.

Re: Banning Scammers

you can change your IP address. My DH is a computer nerd by profession and they change/reassign the IPs all the time for security....

I don't know where I found this, or why I bumped it back into existence...
