I've thought about calling ECI earlier, and I just hope now is not too late, KWIM?
its not too late. you are calling well before 3 years, which is the point at which it gets more challenging to "catch up". i think its always best to call, i mean, you have nothing to lose (maybe a little time) and everything to gain. or rather the child has everything to gain. im not saying this for you, as you already know that, but for other mamas who may be on the fence about seeking an eval.

Re: Well I did it... I called Early Intervention

We waited until my ds was 2 to call. He was not saying anything at 15 months either, maybe mama and dadda but that was probably it. I mentioned it at his 18 month well check and the ped just wanted to wait it out until his 2 year check up then at his 2 year check up he said lets give it 6 more months....I said yeah right and called Early Intervention. We had our first eval and he is very far behind and have the next round of evals on the 26th and the 28th.

GOOD FOR YOU! I think you are taking action at the perfect time. If you did it any earlier, you might be told to wait and see a bit. It most certainly isn't too late

Its definately not too late. 15mos is pretty early. In fact, I don't even know if they'd come much earlier than that for no words yet. It's always better to be safe than sorry, and I think there's a pretty good chance they might tell you that everything is okay. I hope so!!!

Re: Well I did it... I called Early Intervention

:hug

I made that nerve-wracking call myself when DS was 16m with no words (and what was more concerning to me- no babbling). Fortunately, we have an EXCELLENT EI program here, and started recieving services right away. Started off with ST once a week (with the therapist coming to our house), and we've since "graduated" to her coming every other week. Still no labeling words, but he startign to say some animal sounds and exclamations (ouch!, zzzzz (for bug), vrrrr (for car), etc.).

Lots and lots of postitive thoughts for you and your little one!

What exactly would be some clues/signs that intervention is needed...from those that are/have gone through the process.

My son says "dada and mom or mommy"...but not a whole lot more.

I was worried about my older son....he was not verbal at all...he's perfectly fine.

PM me is fine. Thanks!

Re: Well I did it... I called Early Intervention

I am glad you have decided to get the eval done! And don't worry mama, even if there is a delay it is in NO WAY too late. You have showed concern much sooner than many parents I have worked with. Let me know how things go! I hope they can get you in quickly.

I also want to put this out there for any other parents with concerns for their kiddos. Prior to having DD, I worked with Early Intervention. I did developmental testing to determine eligibility and play therapy. I would be more than happy to talk with anyone that has concerns for their DC or just needs to talk. I have also been there as a parent and a sibling. My DS received EI services for speech delay. My brother also received services due to his microcephaly and severe delays. I am here to help or just talk. Feel free to PM me.
