Re: Well I did it... I called Early Intervention

GOOD!!!!!

my DD1 gets help through Early Intervention and they come every 2w and are GREAT!!! super helpful. they come and play with DD with their toys for about 1hr and then every so many months re-evaluate her to see if shes improved. She started out as far behind as 6-9months, now shes only about 1-2m behind and that have stopped speech therapy.

Wonderful resource!!

also wanted to add- DO NOT wait and rely on your Pediatrician to say to get help!!

mine kept saying DD1 was behind because she was premature... she was NOT and she certainly was NOT the 1m behind he seemed to think she was.

DO NOT wait.

Re: Well I did it... I called Early Intervention

On another message board I'm on, someone posted a link to questionaires about children's development. link So I went and took it, and the questions are worrying me now a little. Here's the questions for DD's age and my responses. If I had any doubt that she needed to be evaluated before, I don't anymore.

At the end of the questionaire there was the option to have the results emailed, so I'll update again once I have received those.

Re: Well I did it... I called Early Intervention

Ok the email came already. Guess they have something that can automatically tabulate the results and send them out.

Anyway. Here it is:
Quote:
The scores for your child with birth
date Dec 05, 2006 are as follows: this child's scores in the areas of Communication,
Gross Motor, Fine motor, Problem solving and Personal Social are below the cutoff and
may indicate development in these areas is not on schedule. This may indicate a
significant delay in development.
According to this screening questionaire, looks like she's behind in everything. I hope her EI eval is soon. Good thing today is Friday already so they'll be back in the office next week for me to call.

You did the right thing! WTG for listening to your mama intuition and contacting EI. Even if your child is within normal ranges, it's better to get checked out just in case. Either way, it'll help to put your mind at ease.

I ignored my intuition and listened to friends for far too long. By the time I contacted EI, he was in the dreaded age that he was too old for EI to evaluate him, but not quite old enough for special ed department of the school district to handle it. They have a rule that there has to be a certain number of days between when they evaluate and when they turn three. If it's less than that, they can't evaluate them, yet the school district would evaluate him either because he wasn't three yet. It was very frustrating and in our case my oldest ds has autism. If I had listened to my intuition earlier he could have got more help. He's come a long ways and appears "normal" to most people now.

Re: Well I did it... I called Early Intervention

I was compelled to say that you are doing a great job my ds too has had an eval. and he will start on Tuesday for speech therapy he was 18 months when I started looking into it and it took a while to get everything in order but so far so good he is not talking much if at all he only uses about 12 words that only we his family can understand and so I hope and pray that this will helps us figure out what his needs are. He will be 2 in April.

My not so smart sil did not do this for my poor nephew they waited til the bitter end he is now 5 and is not very undestandable in his speech they say otherwise. They are so in denial that that has hurt my nephew considerably. So I am always glad to hear that parents stand up for their lo.
I know how you feel and I am in the same boat but be thankful that you had your wits about you and did something about it.
