swim diapers and swimsuit questions?

hi,
I am confused when I am shopping for a swimsuit for my daught. She is almost 1 year old and I am noticing at Target they have "swim diaper bottoms" and then there are just regular bikinis and one-piece suits.
If she wears a regular bathing suit.. does she need one of those swim diapers underneath? The swim diapers appear to be a suit bottom on their own since they are thick and i think are a built in diaper too as well as they have colors/prints/decorations. If not, What does she wear underneath a regular swimsuit?

sorry..thanks for your input

Re: swim diapers and swimsuit questions?

If she is wearing a regular bathing suit, then she will need to wear a swim diaper under it if she's going to a pool. Pampers and Huggies make some disposable ones, I think they are called "swimmies" or something similiar. They are in the diaper aisle. They aren't very absorbant, as they are only designed to catch poop and let the pee through.

A swim diaper bottom is designed to be a bathing suit AND a diaper. I personally prefer those. My dd wore them and my ds will too this summer.

ETA: you can use a pocket diaper w/o the insert as a swim diaper. I did that last summer.

Those swim bottoms are the bottoms. Swim dipes aren't made to absorb anything, but to contain messes. If you get a regular swimsuit, you can use a swim dipe under it - we used an unstuffed pocket as our swim dipes. Others have used snug-fitting covers as swim dipes. I suppose you could use the swim bottoms under a regular swimsuit, but that would get pretty bulky, and might look odd with both patterns showing.

Re: swim diapers and swimsuit questions?

When my daughter was that age, I bought her one of those swimsuits from Target. I loved it! I didn't have to put a swim diaper underneath it. Last year she had a regular swimsuit and I always put a sposie swim diaper on her because I didn't want her to use the bathroom in the pool. This year she is potty trained so I don't have to worry about it.

Here is a picture of the swim suit with the built in swim diaper she had from Target (she was a year old).

When you say "regular swimsuit" are you just referring to the one-piece shape, or to the fabric/make? My DD has a one-piece with an extra plastic 'diaper' attached inside. When she uses that, I don't put on a separate swim diaper.
