Camping with a baby?

I would like to take ds on our annual trip this year. Is there anything special that I need to do/bring? Our group will include me(21), ds (then 6 mo), my bro (17), two girls(13 & 8) and a boy (14). Ds and I will be sharing a tent, probably a sleeping bag too. I plan on bringing my sling, his Bumbo seat, extra blankets (for playing on) and some baby food in addition to the regular camping items.

Re: Camping with a baby?

I'm trying to remember if we brought much else when we took ds camping last summer (5mos old, then). I think we overpacked, but I wanted to be prepared in case of bad weather. We had a great time!!! I did bring those foam interlocking squares to put down on a hard surface to make it soft and safe for him to play on.

I have to say, a walker/exi saucer if he will be old enough for it! It makes sitting around the campfire so much easier.

I took DD on a week-long road trip to Canada when she was 5 months old, camping the entire time. DS went on his first camping trip when he was 4 weeks old. Definitely easier when they are non-mobile. But sounds like you'll have plenty of eyes to help watch her.

I'd say make sure you have LOTS of water (for cleaning) and wipes and extras of things that you won't want to use if they fall to the ground. Young baby shouldn't be too bad....

Re: Camping with a baby?

I knolw it sounds funny but we always brought our jolly jumper when we would travel. Benny loved it and was really happy in it. We brought the a frame stand alone kind, it assembles fast and breaks down to nothing. Don't forget baby safe bug spray, i know OFF makes some (my sis's doc suggested citronella oil mixed with water) and sunscreen. I think a playpen would be handy too. You could put a mosquito net over the top. Lots of toys for the road too.
Plenty of baby friendly snacks, like cheerios/puff wheat and rice, mum mums, digestive cookies.
Hope you have a blast!

Re: Camping with a baby?

Dont over pack! They are so happy being "out there," they dont need to many "devices"! Camping with the babes is soooo much fun!!

A lifesaver for us was disposable handwipes.........their hands get sooo dirty

Also a big blanket or something for the ground for them to play on.

Have fun!

Re: Camping with a baby?

Trying to remember from llast summer. I would bring a fleece sleeper, it can get cool at night. Sunscreen, baby-friendly bug spray, I used California Baby, and a hat for your lo. Also eventhough they are wasteful disposable baby wipes are really good for camping. Their hands get dirty so fast.
