Alternative to antibiotics for ear infection?

Any ideas on how to clear an ear infection w/out having to take my DD to the doc for antibiotics?

I'd try just waiting it out for a bit

Our ped often advises waiting it out. It usually will resolve itself. My lo's have both ruptured eardrums in the past year, though, so we don't wait it out currently, we treat to give their ears time to heal.
Waiting it out is completely good medical practice currently!

There is an onion or garlic remedy that I keep seeing pop up. Search the posts for it. Many people swear by it.

When my ds started to act like his ears were starting to bother him (didn't have an ear infection yet, they just seemed to bother him) I used a booboo bag heated up in the microwave and put it on his ears. (make sure its not too hot though)

Whatever you do I'd add Motrin to it, he needs something to help deal with the pain. Motrin and heat work well for that.

We don't vaccinate, we kept our sons intact, we use cloth diapers, we co-sleep, we extended RF, we breastfeed, but we watch too much tv and I totally dig plastic! Everyone has their issues, lol.

Re: Alternative to antibiotics for ear infection?

I had such bad ear infections as a child, and in the 70's there was a movement to not medicate, (so my mom says). I now have hearing loss because of it, and a deep seated rememberance of how painful ear infections were.

That said, my son, had a constant ear infection from 9 months to 18 months old. I took him to the ear dr and the dr said tubes no question. AFTER so , so , so , many antibiotics. Now he is allergic to penicillin we think because of so much exposure to that.

Anyway, regular pediatrician, said no ear tubes. He was very very wrong. Tubes cleared it right up.

All in all, we had to do it that way. Depends on how serious!

That sounds aweful that you had to go through that!
I don't think we will need to go that route. its strange, she is 3 years 4months and her very first ear infection was just a couple months ago. I brought her to the docs and got antibiotics which I am not so sure even helped her. This time I gave her some tylenol, called the doc for an appt, then sat back & watched how much she felt better just from the tylenol. I decided to cancel the appt & see if the infection clears on its own.

I was wondering if there were drops or something to help it heal. My DH seems to think putting vinegar or alcohol in there will help. So i am off to do some research.

Thanks for all your input...

Re: Alternative to antibiotics for ear infection?

Breastmilk!!! We've had very few EI's at our house (1 double dx'd for each child, 1 undiagnosed for ds), but the breastmilk (a few drops, several times a day), plus the Similisan homeopathic ear oil drops w/ a heating pad on top (child lays on his side on couch, put in warmed drops, put heating pad on top) really works well (I know, I had to do it to myself). Garlic mullein oil has been mentioned by others in the past as well, although I haven't tried it. Also, ear candling is indicated for chronic conditions.
