Angry 9 Months old and she's Grinding her Teeth

My prev. had her two bottom teeth and now she has cut one of her two top teeth. She has discovered when you put them together and grind them they make a cool sound. To me it's like fingers on a blackboard!! It's horrible! Besides the sound it makes, is this detrimental to her mouth/jaw/teeth at this point? Anything I can do or do I just have to let her do it and let the appeal of it get old to her?

Re: 9 Months old and she's Grinding her Teeth

DS#2 when there a phase when his first top tooth came in where he did the same thing. It was accually how I found out that he had a top tooth. He was around 9 months. Whenever he would start to grind them I would just ask him to stop and touch his mouth with my fingers. He would stop, but a couple minutes later he would be at it again. He only did it for a week or two. I think it will pass as soon as she finds something else new and exciting. Hang in there!

Re: 9 Months old and she's Grinding her Teeth

Both of my boys went through phases of grinding their teeth right around the same age. It drove me insane! Fortunately, the "fun" wore off quickly and they both stopped within a week or so. But, that week was torture each time!

DS2 does it off and on. I was really concerned when he started b/c DH has had to have extensive surgeries and such for TMJ, but the dentist told me not to worry about anything yet. It is horrible!!

Maddie's got her canines coming in right now and these are by FAR the worst teeth to come in (worse than her 1 year molars). The grinding is HORRIBLE and its so bad when I am wearing her on my back. The hair on the back of my neck stands on end.

My little guy does it too. I asked my dentist and he said it's very normal and will pass. It makes me insane too, lol.

Re: 9 Months old and she's Grinding her Teeth

my daughter has been through that stage a couple of times now. the first time she did it she was about the same age as your child. and the second time she started doing it was somewhere between 1 and 2 years i think. i would take my thumb and forefinger and squeeze her cheeks on either side of her mouth. (like when you take someone's face to look at you, don't squeeze hard just put a little pressure on her and say no or stop) that worked for my dd. both times she's gone through the phase. it didn't last long, just a week or two. she will do it everyonce in a while now just to annoy me. i do the same thing with squeezing her cheeks and she stops.

My dad's a dentist and he says grinding at that age is healthy and helpful. I agree it's annoying though!

thanks mamas! i was beginning to worry it would wreck her teeth or something. sounds like I'll have to stick it out and tell her gently 'no'. I like the idea about the little cheek pinching
