When to switch from infant to premium prefolds?

The infants just don't seem to handle her super pee any more. Will a premium swallow my tiny 4month old? Thanks Emily

Re: When to switch from infant to premium prefolds?

I have a 4.5 month old, and I am in the same boat. I can use infant pf if they are trifolded in a small bummis sww, but if I snappi them he is soaked through in minutes. I usually put him in the infant size when i am letting him go coverless in between naps. But when it is nap time I need to trifold it or usually i put him in a premium with a wool or fleece cover. It is a bulky, but i don't mind for naps.
I was reading a thread about this today and someone suggested trimming your premium prefolds to make them less bulky. I have never tried this.
Good luck!

yes, a premium will probably be quite bulky still.

I used regular prefolds (the same size as premiums, but 4x6x4 instead of 4x8x4) from the time my DS started wetting through infant prefolds until last month--they're much less bulky, but more absorbent than infant pfs.

Or, like the pp said, trimming premium prefolds makes them less bulky, but it removing some material takes away some absorbency also.

Or could you use doublers?

If you use a prefitted it won't be as bulky as a prefold. I have girly ones fs. :wink

you could trim your prefolds and then what i've seen done is to use the part you've trimmed off to sew on the center as sort of a "doubler". it looks like it would really work well to me.

I've trimmed my premiums and reattached the trimmed part as a doubler. I trifold in a cover this way and it works really well. I bought the premiums I might not need them since I do not pin or snappi but at 2 months old, the infants already were not enough so I trimmed them and used them instead. They definitely fit better than untrimmed. Hmmm... maybe I have a picture, let me check.

My 8 month old still does not fit well into the premium prefolds, in fact I just lent a bunch out because they don't fit!!

Good luck finding a solution!

Triming sounds like it would work good, does anyone have a website that shows how? I think the prefitteds would work ok, but DD already has a rise of 15, so I don't want to invest in diapers that she may out grow in a few months. Thanks for all the info .

There are instructions on www.diaperpages.com, there is a link for trimming prefolds. Here is a couple of pictures too at 4 and 5 months old with a trimmed premium prefold trifolded in a medium bummis SWW.

Thanks for the pics, that helps alot . It looks like a premium would be less bulk than doubling the infant prefolds. I also must say that is one cute model. Thanks Emily
