Question Extended breastfeeding and mood swings

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I've been an AP practicing Mom for over 5-1/2 years. I nursed my first child for a little over 2 years, then got pg. I am now nursing my second child and she is a little over 2-1/2 yrs. My question is, has anyone experienced mood swings due to the hormones while breastfeeding? Since I have been either pg or nursing for over 5 years, I'm not sure what is normal anymore!!! Someone suggested that my mood swings were due to my nursing. I was just wondering if anyone here has a bit of BTDT advice. Thanks so much.

When you're nursing there are always hormone issues i find, but I haven't experienced what you are personally. I attribute a lot of things to hormones

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Re: Extended breastfeeding and mood swings have more years on me.. but I totally feel your pain! I got pregnant Sept 2005.. and am still nursing that son.. I am about to pop with son #2 any day now.. who I will obviosuly be nursing too..So.. I've been pregnant AND OR nursing for awhile now myself!

I just started getting mY PPD figured out when I got pregnant with #2 so between that & the hormones..the first trimester..I literally thought I needed to be committed I felt so nutty!! It was HORRIBLE.
I love my nursing relationship & it sounds like you do too, so at the risk of sounding....not so nice...? Sometimes it just feels like I'm tied down because of it! Do I want to wean?? No.. but I am entitled to feel a bit stuck (literally) to my child.. I dont want hours or days away from him..I'd go nuts, but I think its knowing that hes so dependent on that nursing, that it HAS to be me, that sometimes makes me feel abit batty.. I know that probably sounds just awful..I was just so independent before having a kid & somedays ( hes 20 months!!!) he wont stop nursing.. I feel like "hello.. your supposed to be giving me a break before I have your brother!" LOL
My point is.. I get moody in relation to it too... =0)

Re: Extended breastfeeding and mood swings

Hey all,
I breastfed my daughter until she was 14mos, and literally the week I stopped, I felt like myself again. It was like I had forgotten what it was to be normal and happy for an entire year!!!!!! With that said, I became pregnant again shortly therafter, and am currently nursing our son. I think that breastfeeding makes me severely angry? I sometimes just completely fly off the handle, and I'm a little worried that I might take it out on our two year old daughter (who is into everything, and pushes my buttons as it is). Does anyone have any suggestions for a good specialist to consult? Maybe a naturopathic doctor or something, who won't just check me off a list and prescribe me birth control? I've looked a looked in the net about anger issues due to hormone imbalance, and I literally can't find anything.

Re: Extended breastfeeding and mood swings

I nursed my youngest for 3 years. He just self weaned in September. I had mood swings a lot. Up and down, happy, sad, crying, not. I can already feel [in a month], myself feeling more even keel again.

But it was so worth it and it's actually been bittersweet with him not nursing anymore.
