What is the "crunchy" stuff in baby toys called?

I want to make a play blanket for my LO and my cousins new baby due this summer. I would love to make it like a feel and learn type of blanket with a pul backing so they can have naked time on it and not have to clean the floor when they are done. So I have some ideas for some of the patches, but does anyone know what that krinkly stuff is in the toys and if you can buy it anywhere? I am in Canada and we seem to have a limited supply of fabric up here so I think it will have to be bought on line somewhere. TIA

I have no idea but I want to know too. Everything I can think of either wouldn't crinkle, or would be too soft, or wouldn't be washable, etc.

Mylar! That makes sense. I don't know why I didn't think of that. It seems like it would be too thin... but maybe not.

Re: What is the "crunchy" stuff in baby toys called?

I did a google search of Mylar fabric and found this info...it was sold in rolls. I'm not sure if balloons are the same or not.

"Mylar polyester sheet and film is inert to water and acts as a moisture barrier as well as being unaffected by oils, greases and most aromatics.

Even under attack by these conditions, Mylar® polyester sheet or film will retain its superior properties and remain tough, clear and flexible from minus -100°F (-73.33° C) to over 300°F (148.88° C), and since Mylar® polyester contains no plasticizers, it will not become brittle or yellow with age under these or other normal conditions.'

I think you are thinking of the wrong type of balloon..?
Mylar- think BIG silvery/shiny, special occasion type-that you fill with helium.

You know, I was wondering if you could use crunchy plastic like- gift basket wrap(not the shrink wrap kind though, lol)...and just not dry on hot...?

Re: What is the "crunchy" stuff in baby toys called?

I was thinking of the foil type balloons, maybe melt wasnt the right word. Would they stand up to the heat of a dryer or the stitching? I guess I could try it...I have been thinking about just finding a toy on clearance somewhere and taking it apart. I will keep brainstorming..thanks for the great answers...
