Stopping Breastmilk! HELP!

So, I need to stop breastfeeding. We reached 6 mos and my DD has been miserable. She has a dairy and soy intolerance just like her older brother and she just can't handle the breastmilk. I have cut everything out of my diet, but still no luck. So I have finally come to terms with stopping. We had to cut her off completely yesterday so she will take the bottle. She is doing much better, but I am in SOOOOOOOO much pain!!!! I bought some fresh sage and was wondering how much I need to eat to make the milk stop. With DS it took more than 2 weeks of horrible pain, so I am looking for an alternative. Any suggestions???? I'm desperate!!

Earth Mama Angel Baby makes a tea for that, I haven't tried but so I'm not sure how well it works though.

When I stopped BF my older DS, I would pump for a few minutes when the engorgement got painful. Just long enough to give some relief.

It takes longer to dry up, but it's not nearly as uncomfortable, IMHO.

*ETA*

you could also take an antihistimine (like Benadryl) or a medication to dry up nasal secretions (like sudafed). they both will help dry up milk production.

Re: Stopping Breastmilk! HELP!

i'm not sure about fresh sage, but my MW had me use sage tincture after we lost our daughter & "bind" my breasts w/ 2 snug-fitting sports bras. it took over a month for me to dry up STILL & i wasn't able to BF that time at all, so i'm not sure how long to expect it to take since you've BFd for 6mo. but i know the sage tincture helped w/ the engorgement pain after the first week.
good luck!

Re: Stopping Breastmilk! HELP!

I'm sorry you had such an awful time nursing and it was a bad experience for you. That really makes me sad. You have ot do what you think is best. Cabbage leaves helped me with really bad engorgement with Sara so I highly recommend them for stopping nursing and drying up along with sudafed. But you'll smell pretty rancid with the cabbage leaves in your bra. A sports bra should minimize some of the discomfort too. Anything to bind the breasts a little should help. Just be careful with cold turkey because you could get mastitis and no one wants that.

Re: Stopping Breastmilk! HELP!

I had to stop before my treatments and I did it over a week. I cut out one feeding every 24 hours. Then when I got down to the last two days I would pump only when I couldn't stand it anymore.
