zyrtec?

My SIL will be here in a few hours and she forgot to ask her LC's if she can take zyrtec while nursing. She's concerned because the box says not to take if you are pregnant and breastfeeding...but doesn't everything?

She's not so much concerned about supply issues. The girl is a milk machine (seriously who at can pump 7 ounces from each breast 14 months into breastfeeding? That shouldn't be normal!!)

Re: zyrtec?

You know, on the bottle it says not to if you are breastfeeding. I usually take that sort of thing with a grain of salt but it usually says 'check with your Dr.' - this says 'don't'

SO I have been suffering. I actually drool a little when I give it to my kids

Re: zyrtec?

From kellymom:

"Zyrtec is also generally considered to be compatible with breastfeeding. It is commonly used by nursing moms, although its levels in milk are not known. Hale rates Zyrtec in the lactation risk catagory L2 (safer). "

Re: zyrtec?

Claritin is a safer alternative, and I would try that before the Zyrtec, and even then ask the LC b/c I personally wouldn't take it.

Re: zyrtec?

I was actually told Zyrtec was the safest while nursing, so that's what I've always taken. And an L2 in Hale's is certainly okay.

I take zyrtec too, tried not taking anything but naturals for awhile but I was suffering so gave in.

It is safe while pregnant and BF'ing , at least thats what like 4 diff. docs have told me and 2 Lac. consultants

just make sure to follow dosing instructions!

Re: zyrtec?

I am on zyrtec year round for allergies (asthma too) - I took it throughout my pregnancy and have taken it through 10 months of breastfeeding too - with no problems and with the blessing of my allergist and OB/GYN and pediatrician.

HTH!
