Supplementing an EBF baby with Vit. D?

Ds had his 4 month check up today, and the dr told me something I had never heard. I BFed my other two kids, and was never told this. He said that there isn't sufficient Vitamin D in BM, and that they are now recommending supplementing it in EBF babies.

Anyone else been told this? He gave me a prescription for ds, but I'm not sure about it. Isn't BM THE perfect food for babies?? Why do they need the supplement of anything?

yep I was given the same speech, I decided not to supplement.

It takes 17 min a day or less with the head and hands exposed to the sun to produce all the vitamin d we need http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/vi...vitamin-d.html

My doctor never mentioned this but the lady at wic did, like I am going to listen to her medical advice. (She also told me that I HAVE to give DS solids after 6m bc breastmilk is not enough and that it HAS to be cereal.) Since DS has been born I try to get him around 15mins of sunlight a day, even it is just laying in a sunny window. Of course not all days are sunny but it is often enough.

yes, this is the latest reccomendation, the tri visol vitamins ( i think that's what it's called) ...but it's supposed to be given to your baby from about 2weeks old ( i was told about it at my daught. 2week appt if I remember correctly) to 1 year. It's not a prescription vitamin drops though.. and it only cost like $2.50 at my Kaiser health insurance pharmacy.

You dont need to supplement anything to an EBF baby. If you are worried about vitamin D, then YOU need to take a supplement, not baby.

If the baby sees sun for a little bit every day you're fine with Vit D.

I gave ds the trivisol until I realized it was making his reflux worse.

Our old ped gave us the whole speech about that, too. We had other issues with our ped, so we left and found a new wonderful ped! He told us it wasn't necessary, just get a little sun each day.

Re: Supplementing an EBF baby with Vit. D?

Supplementing with vitamin D is more necessary in areas where there isn't much sunlight or for dark skinned babies and especially if there is a combination of the two. I brought this up with my ped around 4 months and she said it wasn't necessary. We didn't even go outside everyday and never appeared to have a problem.
