Anyone ever have a hamster with toddlers?

I was thinking of getting DS a hamster to put in his room. Ever since he moved into the toddler bed he's been scared of his room, and doesn't want to sleep by himself. I've tried letting the cat sleep in there, but after about 10 minutes she's scratching at the door to get out. I thought a hamster might make him feel better, it always comforted me when I was a kid, but I don't know if he's old enough? We do have an aquarium we could use, but the lid to it doesn't lock. I've found people talking about locking lids online, but I'm not sure how sturdy they are? If I could find one, do you think it would be safer on the floor, or on some kind of table/shelf? Or is the whole idea just bad? I've considered buying a wire cage too, but I thought the fact that he could stick his fingers in there might be bad.

Sooo.....anyone ever have a toddler and a hamster at the same time?

I've had hamsters, gerbils and rats...all are nocturnal. Or seem to make the most noise during the night anyway. If your lo is already scared the added noise of a rodent is probably not going to help. I like the idea of the aquarium, though. IMO that would be kind of soothing to drift off to.

Hamsters will bite through the bars of their cage and I wouldn't trust a toddler to not stick their fingers in them. The aquarium sounds fine and re: locking the lid there are lid locking type things in the reptile section. It makes it so you can't open the lid plus they are kinda hard to get off. Occasionally I would have trouble.

Hamsters do make quite a bit of noise at night.

we had a hampster that my older DS tried to "play" with... after he bounced off the wall he squeaked no more. DS thought he could climb the wall like on TV.... after that we decided no more little animals.

We have 2 hampsters. Leap and Piggy!
Piggy bites...BAD, so she is up high, and we don't play with her

Piggy is SUPER fast, but loves the girls!

They are loud at night, maybe a fish would be more calming!

We did just get 3 rats. They are fairly young still, and very sweet. So far my ds..now 4 and knowing what will happen if he holds them too tightly...can handle them as well as my 2 yr old dd. They love to ride on their shoulders and have not bitten at all!

Re: Anyone ever have a hamster with toddlers?

my kiddos are older than toddlers, but we had one and it didn't end well for the hampster. Despite my loooong lectures about being careful with him, not squeezing him, not dropping him, always being seated with him, I think he was loved to death. Plus, when the neighbrs little ones came over they would get him out and accidentally drop him. Poor lil hampster. RIP.
