My baby is nursing great, but I have a couple of " is this normal" questions
When he latches on, a couple seconds later I let down and the baby gulps. After about 5 minutes, he doesn't suck deeply anymore and starts playing around mostly with a couple deep sucks afterwards. Will he be getting the fatty milk if he doesn't latch and suck deeply for long periods of time? He has plenty of poopy and pee diapers ( yellow seedy appearance). He also LOVES to fall asleep at the breast, but I let him stay on as long as possible-- but goly, after 20-30 minutes of hardly any progress, I've got to get up ( I've got 2 other kids!) Thanks!

Sounds pretty normal to me... The fact that he has those wonderful movements is plenty affirmation that he is getting exactly what he needs. In fact, sounds like both of my children during their first days. I wondered the same thing but stopped worrying after I realized that all was well. They almost always fell asleep at the breast. Some lactation specialists recommend nursing them in a diaper so that they are more stimulated to stay awake while eating. I really never did this but did take them off after about 20-30 minutes or extremely long periods of inactivity... you know, the nibbling. It just kept my nipples from being so sore. The only thing is, seems as soon as I did, the LOs would simply wake up wanting more

Re: baby is 7 days old, question
the let down may just be too much and causing the baby the gulp and lay off a bit but because baby is pooping and peeing normally i would say all is ok! baby my just be more thirsty than hungry - foremilk is more watery - hind milk is fatty. so is he still gaining? sounds pretty normal thus far to me.

Re: baby is 7 days old, question
Yeah, your baby may just be a very efficient nurser already. My sil says her boys were all very fast nursers and were always done within 10-15 min, and were fast growing, healthy babies. mine would nurse forever!! Hours sometimes, it seemed!

Re: baby is 7 days old, question
Sounds like everything is great, mama. I know my let down is pretty forceful, and all my kiddos would choke a little when they were tiny and new. You're doing a great job!

Re: baby is 7 days old, question
thanks ladies! when we went to the pediatrican at 6 days old and he gained 5 ounces ( 2 ounces from being back at birth weight). We are susposed to go back at 2 weeks old, but I can't drive so I'll probably weight another week- assuming I don't have any questions.
He eats frequently. My breasts are never firm ( like the engorged) but I see milk coming out his mouth, so I know he's getting it LOL

Re: baby is 7 days old, question
Sounds like you are doing an awesome job momma!!!!!! My baby is an efficient sucker (5-10 min tops) and has already doubled his birth weight by 4 months!
As long as he's having the yellow poops then you know he's getting the hindmilk!
