Domestic adoptions & Networking

My biggest piece of advice for anyone who is wanting to adopt domestically... is: "Tell everyone you know!" This is what we did with our last adoption... we sent a letter out to our friends & family and explained how we wanted to grow our family through adoption. We included a "Dear birthmom" letter to introduce ourselves... and gave them permission to pass it along to anyone they knew that had contact with someone dealing with an unplanned pregnancy, or anyone that has contact with potential birthmoms. Send me a PM if you'd like to see an example of this (I'll send you what we sent out.)

Also, we are looking to adopt again, so I'll be working on updating our letter and started to get the word out.... so if anyone here knows of someone who is interested in placing an infant for adoption, PM me if you'd like to know more about us to pass along.... since we have one child, our second child will be guarenteed to have a big sister!

Also make sure to tell your Doctors. OB, general practitioner etc. They will occasionally have a patient who wants to place a baby for adoption and will recommend you.
Thats how our friend found her daughter, her OB matched them
Also if your home study is already done, you can visit the local maternity hospital and let them know too. and give them all your info.

Yep, other great tips! My OB had told me to keep her posted of our plans because sometimes she has situations come up... (this was after one of our miscarriages when we told her we were considering adoption as an option.)

good luck to you! Are you with an agency? What kind of adoption are you looking for? Tell us a little about your "long journey"...

Re: Domestic adoptions & Networking

It has been long for us too..I watch the Adoption Story's everyday (DVR them ) and they get a baby in weeks! We have been on a waiting list for 9 month and we are #6 on the waiting list to get into the "pool" (the pool is a pool of 10 couples that is where the BM picks from)...so we still have a very looonnng wait . That is why we are looking on our own also...
