Congratulations! We have a little girl from China. The wait is already over 3 years! It is crazy right now! They just referred Jan '06, this group had 3 days in it! We were Nov. 9, 2005 and waited over 21 months from LID to pick up.
It had always been my dream o adopt from China as well.

Our process took from March of '05 to August '07.

Our other daughter is from Haiti. She was sick when we adopted her so they expedited a lot of hers.
I found her on May 25th, 2006 and we started the process June 1st, 2006. SHe came home Feb. 2, 2007. Her whole process was about 8 months.

Re: International adoptions

Hello all! I am super excited about this forum being up. DH and I are at the beginning stages (well, PRE beginning stages actually) of adopting from Ethiopia. We have looked into agencies, etc. but have decided to wait until he returns from a deployment to Iraq. He will be home June '09. We could have TRIED to get everything done between July of this year (when he gets home from the 3 month-er he is on now) and November, when he leaves, but for a ton of reasons, we decided to wait. I KNOW it is for the best but my heart just feels like it is going to stay broken until we make the next step in this process.

I feel like a participant when I see you guys in your various stages of the process!

I think choosing an agency kind of depends what country/program you want to do. I lurk alot on the yahoo group- Adoption Agency Research, I think. I think for the Ethiopian program, we are leaning towards Gladney but also like Holt. But there are other great ones! We are considering alot of thing such as where we will be stationed and will that be an issue for them, training requirements (in-house or online/video, etc.), what happens if we get pregnant during the process, etc.

I live in SE VA and all of the agencies I have looked at are "far" away, so yes, we will use a seperate agency for our home study.

Re: International adoptions

Very cool forum!

We adopted two sweet peas from Guatemala last year. We started the process in Nov. '06 and Anna came home in July '07 at 14 months and Gideon came home in Oct. '07 also at 14 months. Unfortunately Guatemala is closed right now to new adoptions, but I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about it. I am very proud of our adoptions and I am pretty much an open book about them.

Also, we tried to adopt from Russia, but our twin girls were lost to the system after two trips to Russia. So, I know a decent amount about international adoption in general. Plus, if I don't know I can probably find out. I have made some pretty good friends that have adopted/are adopting also, so if I don't know something, they might.

Just pm me if you'd liek to know anything!

Julie

let me HIGHLY recommend Gladney to you. That's who we are using and they are WONDERFUL. They are very on top of things there. The communication is great and you won't find that with alot of agencies. We're on the waitlist for a baby girl from Ethiopia thru Gladney right now.

Re: International adoptions

We are going through Bethany Christian Services. I am very happy with them and love our adoption specialist.

We are open to a daughter with special needs from China so that may speed some of the wait time up for us. At least I know from the start that is it 3yrs. I feel so bad for those who thought it was going to be quicker and it was long. Also, once they get to March 07 LIDs then it might speed up since they put a bunch of new restrictions on it. And I am hoping after the Olympics it might speed up a bit too. Who knows though!

Re: International adoptions

We have a referral for a baby boy (3 months) from Ethiopia. We are just waiting to get through court so we can go pick him up! It has been quite a process. We switched in the middle of the process to go through Zambia but fortunately escaped a heartache there. It turns out that the American agency was breaking Zambian law (which was clear when I spent hours reading through their adoption law). The agency was warned by LOTS of people and disregarded it. (may I mention this was a Christian agency? )
I say that to say this: the number one factor in choosing an agency should be ethics. I recommend joining the agency research group and checking into archives before signing on to ANY agency. (although the ones mentioned thus far are great agencies.) We are with Dove and have loved them. They have allowed us to continue with our pregnancy and the adoption which is rare.

Re: International adoptions

Laura- Is your blog on the Gladney site? I am stinkin' addicted to checking adoption blogs. I CAN'T STOP LOOKING AT THEM! And some people don't even update them that often- LOL...oh well...I have dreams of having my own blog but I tried one when I was pregnant and it lasted through 1 trimester...

Jodi- Hey again! Yikes on the not-so-christian agency! I like Dove too...they fit perfectly in our "spreadsheet" of wants/desires/etc. but was kind of concerned with some negative stuff I read on the Ethiopia Adoption yahoo group...But I know that everyone might have an issue with EVERY agency, so I don't know what to take with a grain of salt! Of course, by the time we start our process OFFFICIALLY, we may change our mind. My heart is in Ethiopia but I am curious about the new Rwanda programs starting up- any thoughts or knowledge on Rwanda you want to share?

Yes, my blog is on the site...it's http://jesuslovinmommaof2.blogspot.com/

I'm sure you've seen my friend Tara's blog. She's so amazing but her blog will clue you in on the real ups and downs of adoption. http://littlesilvestriboy.blogspot.com/
