Baby Carriers with Scoliosis

I am looking for a good baby carrier. My problem is that I have scoliosis, so I need something that really distributes the weight front and back and side to side. I've tried slings, but I can't do them, because the weight isn't distributed evenly.

Anyone have any suggestions? I've been using a Baby Bjorn with good success, but it belongs to a friend, and I'd like to get something of my own.

Thanks!

Re: Baby Carriers with Scoliosis

I have severe scoliosis and I've used an Infantino carrier that I got from the thrift store (it looked almost new when I got it) without any problems.

I have scoliosis too....and love my Ergo baby carrier. The straps are adjustable and I can make one side shorter so it fits perfect. It is also super comfy for DD since it supports her hips and legs, not letting her legs dangle like some other styles of baby carriers. DH loves to use it too. The Ergo is a little expensive ($92 new) but you can find deals and it is worth the $. Check out www.myfavoritebabycarrier.com

I have scoliosis and had back surgery. I LOVE my mei tai. I'm hoping for a wrap soon too, just b/c my guy is 32lbs and still needs hours of carrying at a time.

Re: Baby Carriers with Scoliosis

I, too, have pretty severe scoliosis. I can wear a ring sling for no longer than an hour and as DS is approaching 15 lbs I think those days are numbered. That said, I LOVE my mei tai. I have no pain at all with it and have no problems getting him to sit "even" eventho my shoulders aren't. I had a Snugli with my first and had real problems with it. I'm currently coveting a Moby and have heard good things from other curvy-spined ladies.

Re: Baby Carriers with Scoliosis

I can custom make a mai tei for you with really wide straps to help distribute the weight better. My husband has scoloisis, too and he uses our mai tei's with no problems. I make the chest straps 13.5" wide and the waist straps are 9" wide. Then I pleat them. I can make the chest straps wider than that to suit you.

I have made mai tei's for mamas here with great success.

You should go with a mei tai or an Ergo.

Re: Baby Carriers with Scoliosis

I have back probs, mild scoliosis, and my sling has actually strengthened my back. After almost 7 years of being a sling mom, I just did a custom Mei Tai with Becky (the7dunlaps) here on DS. Her Mei Tais rock, very well made. I just LOVE it! Her body shape is slightly contoured, and I got padding in my straps and at the legs for baby...plus extra long straps. Can't rave enough!
