Sturdy (and padded) shoulder straps is also important for the mom wearing the mei tai. I never thought that was a major concern before until my baby bjorn started giving me lower backaches because of the poor shoulder support.

Thanks for the advice. I think it will be helpful when buying from off brand sellers (like etsy). This allows shoppers confidence and a wider selection than just the brand name companies.

Re: What To look for in a baby carrier

Anyone know of a good Mei Tai dealer that's not super expensive? My 4 month old DS is 16 lbs and I'm using a Ring Sling (which he loves) but it's KILLING my back, he's just getting too heavy for it and it throws off my COG. I just tried a Mai Tia and he was having a blast in it but I can't find any under $150 and I don't exactly know what to look for since I'm shopping online (I live in the sticks). And what do you mean by an x-box? I forgot to mention I'd like one with clasps (instead of ties) bc of ease of use. If you know a good brand PLEASE let me know.

Re: What To look for in a baby carrier

The portable baby.com site was a great help to compare all the different brands out there. I went with the Beco Gemini, its the only soft-structured carrier that does a forward facing and a hip carry, plus it doesn't require any insert for newborns like the Ergo. I got a good deal on frogmama.com for a used one. I haven't gotten to actually use it yet since I'm still 7 weeks from babies arrival, but it seems very well made.

Has any one used Seven slings? Are they a decent brand?
