Anyone have a baby with VSD?

Ventricular septic defect which is a hole in the heart. The dr diagnosed it at 20 weeks and I had another sono at 24 weeks and it was still there. This week I go into Children's Medical Center Dallas to have a fetal echo, so they can give us more information about the heart. I am trying to not be worried, but it's at the back of mind always and I'm concerned how it could impact my birth. I will know more on Wednesday, but would love it if you could share your story and tell me how things went. Thanks!

Re: Anyone have a baby with VSD?

My sister was born with tetralogy of Fallot and a rightsided aortic arch - basically VSD with various other heart defects. She was born vaginally fine - however, she did go into congestive heart failure at 5 months old (they wanted to wait until she was 2 for the surgery to correct it) and had open heart surgery to correct it then. She has been perfectly healthy since then though (and she's 23 now). If I remember right, she went to Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. VSD is a really correctable defect though, and AFAIK you should be able to birth vaginally just fine if that is what you are going for.

We were going for a homebirth, but it's possible I may have to birth in the hospital. We will see what they tell me tomorrow if it even comes up.

Glad to hear your sister is a healthy 23 year old.

Re: Anyone have a baby with VSD?

I don't see why you couldn't have a home birth - it depends on how bad the VSD is though, how big the hole is, etc. The doctors are probably going to tell you that you need to birth in a hospital though. My mom ended up having 6 out of 10 as home births (although not my sis with the VSD because that was before she found out about HB). *hugs* I hope you get your homebirth and that it is beautiful!
