Typical midwife cost in Indiana?

Is anyone from Indiana? Does anyone know about what the typical cost for a midwife attended home birth?
After much bouncing back and forth dh and I have finally decided to go for a third. I would really like to explore the option of a midwife attended home birth, but have no clue as to how much it cost?
thanks mamas

I'm having a hb in Indiana!! Our insurance is covering most of it so It will cost us less than 800 out of pocket. What insurance do you have? Have you interviewed any MW's yet?

Re: Typical midwife cost in Indiana?

We actually just made the decision this past week to start trying again. I haven't even called any yet, I figured it was a little early yet
We do not have maternity benefits at all. So we would be paying completly out of pocket. I am in Fort Wayne, are you also in this area?
I have heard that even paying for a midwife out of pocket will be cheaper than if we delivered in a hospital with insurance. Do you have an idea of what the total cost was before you figured your ins copays?

Re: Typical midwife cost in Indiana?

The above price sounds correct. I'm from further south, sorry! But keep in mind a CNM is going to be more expensive than a CPM Also ask if you have to purchase your own birth kit and factor that in. Also if you choose to have any labs or tests done.
I went w/ a CNM b/c I am having a HBA2C so she's a little bit more. But, the birth kit is included. My insurance also has paid for my u/s and the few labs I did have done.

Melissa,
What insurance do you have? We have Humana and I just assumed they wouldn't pay for a homebirth(since it's considered "illegal" here). Our midwife is $1500, she's actually from Louisville, KY. Typically they are around $2000-$3000 in this area.

I'm pretty sure that homebirths aren't illegal in Indiana if they are attend by a Nurse Midwife rather than a CPM or Direct Entry Midwife.

I'm in the same area, but I do not have a cost for you. I would just recommend calling and asking. If you would like contact info for hb midwives in our area, let me know. I volunteer for a group in Fort Wayne called Birth Matters. There was at least 1 hb midwife at the Birth to Baby Family Fair that Birth Matters and the Fort Wayne Doula Network had on May 2.

Glad to see someone from the area and congratulations on deciding to try for the third!

Re: Typical midwife cost in Indiana?

We have blue cross/blue shield. She told me that through them she has never had a claim denied and she has a billing agency she works with. When I called they told me no, but when the billing agency called they approved us and we just have to pay the copay. It is worth looking into! I know on MDC they have appeal letters and everything to help you out under the HB section

But you are right, even paying the whole thing is usually cheaper than a hospital, espically if you don't have maternity coverage.

HB is not illegal in Indiana as long as the midwife is certified (CNM). Most of the trouble w/ mw in IN is that they do not have prescription rights That is what they are fighting for right now.
