Re: baby food: jar vs homemade

With Adam (my oldest) I made most of his. I had fun picking out fresh organic vegetables and cooking/mashing them. When Luke came around I did mostly jarred out of convenience. I was just so busy at that time. My son never got sick from anything I made. I would either serve it fresh or freeze it and then heat it up for him. Most of the jarred food was Earth's Best Organics or Gerber Organic.

Just another vote for www.wholesomebabyfood.com
We would buy organic veggies one at a time for DD and boil them up and freeze them in ice cube trays after squishing them up in the food mill. I would just store the loose cubes in ziplock bags.

Re: baby food: jar vs homemade

We have just recently introduced solids but Sydnee has eaten a couple things of gerber food but we just bought a magic bullet for Christmas and I made a bunch of bananas! I can't wait to make more. BTW I highly recommend that thing! I threw some bananas in the cup, screwed on the blade and PRESTO I had bananas in less than 2 minutes! I poured them into the ice cube trays and we are done! Clean up is quick and simple too!!! Much better than finding places to store all that jarred food!

We also made my 3 year old dd's food. She preferred the homemade stuff!

I gave both boys homemade. It was never a question with them, I just did it. Of course my youngest ds didn't even want the homemade stuff, he wanted what I had on my plate from the get go, lol.

Like everything we've done, we took our parents' advice here first (sposies and Gerber food)....then realized that the best part of being a parent is you don't have to be your parents. We started making ds (yes, even dh did it too) as soon as we realized how NASTY the Gerber food was. The dogs wouldn't even eat it, and they lick their butts!!!

Re: baby food: jar vs homemade

I see you've already made a decision, but I had to pipe in with my .

I cannot for the life of me see how that dr. can say homemade food is likely to cause food poisoning... it just doesn't make sense. I mean, you & your dh eat the food made in your kitchen all the time and aren't getting food poisoning? What's going to be different when your ds moves from the single purees to mashed table food and what not? It just doesn't make sense to me...

Like a pp mentioned, it makes me think of when dr.'s told parents that formula was best and their child would starve on breastmilk.

We used a combo of both jarred & homemade. I was just too lazy to do only homemade. I think for the amount that actually gets eaten, either one is fine. It really sucks that your pedi is giving out bad info to all parents though.

Re: baby food: jar vs homemade

For my first two kids we used jar food (before we knew about cloth). We started making our own with ds#3 but he didn't want anything pureed. We tried the jar food and that was a definate no no for him he spit it back out. We just cut up his food really small or mushed it with a spoon.

Ds isn't starting solids for another few weeks, but when he does, it will be completely homemade. I can't stand the idea of him getting all the preservatives and such from those jars. Not to mention the nutients lost in the preserving process.

I made most of DS's baby food, even though I worked full time. When I was busy or when we were traveling or eating out, we usually used jarred food. He was pretty much eating all table food by about 9 months, though.
