It's official~ our doctor thinks I'm a fruit loop!- UPDATED!

So Bennett had his 9 month old checkup today. He was 28" (45%) and 21 lbs, 12.8 oz (70%). He's not as big as I thought!!

Anyways, we see a family practitioner and she insists that Bennett is iron deficient and that we NEED to begin feeding him baby food. I disagree and think that breastmilk is fine and designed perfectly for his body. (And we do feed him for the record, I just don't push it) Eventually I broke down and agreed to run bloodwork. Mostly I wanted to prove that I was right.

Has anybody else run blood work for this same thing? What did your results say?

Luckily we didn't even get into the great vaccine debate today. Her best comment- "You guys have always done your own kind of thing." Yes we have, thankyouverymuch. Now if only she would respect that and back off!

Audrey

Everything was within the normal limits!!

hmmm, I'd look for a new pedi. My pedi said that the iron in breastmilk is more readily absorbed than iron in formula & table food I just love him.

I would have to agree. I've heard from several sources that BF babes need iron supplement, but haven't had any problems. I'm pretty sure LLL has the most up-to-date info re: iron supplements and BF'ing - if you need articles to show your doc, check out their site @ www.llli.org.

Personally, I think most docs are stating misinformation, they aren't trying to, they just don't have the most current info. JMO.

Totally off topic, but I love the name Bennet! That was one of the names we were considering for our lo.

I agree with all the PP about the iron in breastmilk.

My first son had his iron levels checked at 9 months of age. He had eaten nothing but breast milk at that point, and his levels were 100% fine. Well within normal range, not even lower limit of norm.

http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/so...ay-solids.html

Print that out for your next visit

As well as this:

http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/iron.html

Breastmilk has a lower level of iron then solids, but a much higher rate of absorption of the iron, as the iron in breastmilk is bound to proteins specifically to make them absorb more easily and in great quantities as well as breastmilk is high in Vit C and lactose which also help aid in the absorption of iron.

So even though it has a lower amount, much more actually ends up being absorbed.

Mine too! I might want to question doing blood work My dd will be a year next week and we've just started solids in the past few weeks. Shes fine! I'm sure your boy is fine too! No need for investigation!

Re: It's official~ our doctor thinks I'm a fruit loop!

Well, IME, testing iron levels at the 9 month checkup is pretty standard for all babies. And while I know that the iron in breastmilk is more readily available than the iron in other foods, my kids' situations went against that. My first started solids easily at 6 months (continued bf'ing until 18mos), and when his iron was checked at 9 months, he was totally fine. My second refused solids until around 9 months, and even then it was reluctantly, and when her levels were checked at 9 months, they were low. So she was exclusively bf'ing, but her levels were low anyway. And that low iron was hindering her ability to use her food adequately and put on weight (she was off the bottom of the chart - 16lbs at 1 year). I guess what I'm saying is that the standard iron level testing has a basis in fact, some babies do get low, because they are born w/ enough iron to last until about 6 months, and some people have a harder time using the iron in their diet. I don't think your doc was targeting you, just running a standard test, and providing the basic level of care.
