Storing rice and grains in glass jars?

Anyone do this? I've been stocking up on rice and flour (and dried beans for that matter) and want to store them as well and as cheaply as possible. Can I just reuse old spaghetti jars (or applesauce, as the case may be) to store them in? I don't have any kind of vaccum sealer or anything--will they be okay?

I think so, that's what is recommended in my book about making homemade baby foods from grains.

i store my flour in a drawer in the bag after i freeze it for a week to kill off anything that may be alive in there. That is only because i have no space to put jars in my kitchen. I do keep all my grains and beans in mason jars without a problem.

Yep. I do this. My mom gave me some of her old gallon glass mayonnaise jars. They're awesome. I keep dried beans, flour, popcorn, and rice in them.

I do exactly as you are talking about doing, just saved old glass jars. I did buy a couple for big stuff, but mostly just re-used what I already had. Thrift stores often have cheap glass jars also. I have had some dried beans in the same jars for at least a year now with no vacuum seal and they have stayed just fine.

Re: Storing rice and grains in glass jars?

I keep all of my glass jars, too! I did buy some gallon size jars from Walmart (made by anchor hocking) because I have a TON of grains.

Since I grind my wheat for bread making, I keep the wheat stored in a 6 gallon bucket with a gamma lid. But for all of the smaller amounts of grains, nuts, and even dried fruits- it's all glass...

It looks like plenty of people have success with this method, but I can't help but wonder about the light being let in by a clear container. I guess if it's in a cupboard it's okay, but otherwise I might wonder about that.
