Re: I guess daycare wasn't the right choice for us. :(

I worked at a daycare as child development specialist & all the teachers there needed to have a college degree & our center was cleaned every night. It was very clean, but kids still got lots of colds because kids share everything!
Honestly the pay isn't great & it is hard to find good caregivers. And the turn around is high & the benefits aren't great. I wasn't technically an employee of the daycare, but kind of contract through social services. Just to get vacation time you had to work a year just to get 1 week off & 2 years to get 2 weeks off & work 10 years to get 3 weeks off & paid a lot to insurance. Not much incentive to stay & the hours were long & very short breaks. The teachers a lot of time couldn't even get out to go to the bathroom.
When looking for a daycare ask about the benefits of the employees because if they get good pay & benefits they'll be happier caregivers.

Re: I guess daycare wasn't the right choice for us. :(

I feel like crap not checking out their bathroom before I began leaving him over two weeks ago.. I thought I looked over everything I should have. I went in their kitchen, it was picked up and clean.. the floors looked swept and mopped.. things were put in shelves and neatly organized. The outdoor toys even appeared to be clean and the outside gates securely locked. Why didn't I think to even look in the bathroom? That should have been on my mind, but since everything else looked great, I didn't think of looking in the bathroom.

Oh thank you! If I look into another daycare, I will definitely ask them this!

I see that someone else mentioned this too but I'd look into a good playgroup. : ) Our children love playgroup but I"m also there to see what goes on with them. Don't beat yourself up mama.
Hope he feels better very soon! : )

I agree with the other posters who said that this will help build up his immune system. We all get colds....kids are no different. And definitely if he's been at home for the beginning of his life, he's going to be more susceptible when he first enters daycare, school, etc. But that's how we all build up our immunity, by being exposed to germs. Hang in there!

I can see where you're coming from, but a cold isn't the end of the world... I'm actually surprised that your LO was over 1 year old before getting sick.

Yep, he's actually over 2 now and has never had a cold. Much of that reason I have attributed to the antibiotic-like properties from him nursing.. now he's down to a couple times during bedtime.. him getting less mama milk + an environment with various viruses/bacteria = sick..
The only other times he's truly been sick was from recurrent ear infections, which aren't contagious and his tubes have cleared up that problem.. He did break out in hives last week, I think maybe it was a precursor to this maybe? I don't really know. Either way, this bites.

Re: I guess daycare wasn't the right choice for us. :(

Wow on this being his first cold! Do you guys leave the house much?

All of mine were/are nursed- my 1st was a serious addict and I had to pry her off when she was almost 4!

But, they have all had a zillion colds and the baby seems to have one pretty much all of the time...

'Course I am so non-germaphobic. Mine is the kid eating the woodchips at the park

Ditto on what the PP said-it sounds like a sub par facility with sub par employees who don't care about the kids like they should. Have you looked into Gymboree or something similar? My 3 yr.old nephew is pre-schooled at home but needs the social interaction so my sister has looked into My Gym and Gymboree...just a thought!
