Re: I am just really worried! Fevers up to 104.7!

No.. no sores anywhere.. although when his fever gets up to 104, he has these fine tiny red dots on his chest and back.. once his fever starts to go down under about 103 or so, they aren't noticable any more though..

Re: I am just really worried! Fevers up to 104.7!

I would take him to the ER and get a cbc done ASAP!!

Ds1 had something very similiary when he was 11 mos old. He got a fever but seemed ok, the next morning he was lethargic, glassy eyed, fast resps. The dr ordered a blood test and chest xray, thinking pneumonia. Xray was normal but his white count was critically high (30,000) meaning he had a severe infection somewhere in his body. They sent us to the ER for a spinal tap to rule out meningitis, gave him tylenol first since his temp was 104. Well by the time the ER saw him his temp was down and he was jumping around just fine. They repeated the cbc, wbc came back at 29000 so they said he was getting better, didn't do the spinal but sent him home with a shot in the butt and rx. No other bloodwork. Well, 4 days later his temps have been going up but then coming down with meds but suddenly he is very lethargic, won't wake up, won't eat or drink or even nurse. I took him to a different ER, even though my family said to give the meds time to work. His temp was over 105 and it took an hour to draw blood and start the IV because he was extremely dehydrated from the fever. He had to stay in the hospital for 5 days on IV antibiotics and fluids. Because they had not done any bloodwork prior to starting the first antibiotics the hospital had no idea what they were treating. The ER dr was P*SSED, I had the original lab results and he said if he had seen them he would have had ds immediately air lifted to the children's hospital because there are just soo many things it could have been and some of them are quickly fatal. They said if I would have waited until even just the next morning to bring him in that he probably would have slipped into septic shock and they might not have been able to save him. Thank God he pulled through and was ok. The final dx was bacteremia, or a bacterial infection of the blood. Very vague and frustrating since we don't know what caused it, how it affected his brain, etc He was around all my little cousins and niece but was the ONLY child in the family to get sick, so who knows.

I don't mean to scare you or anything. It was a horrible ordeal for ds to go through and me to go through as his mother. I really wish I would have pushed more for a spinal tap or even just a blood culture but back then I didn't know about those things. Thankfully I was still bf'ing, they said even just the few drops he got from comfort nursing kept him alive. Oh and during that whole wk and a half before he was finally admitted he would go from looking like he was on death's door, fever 104 or higher, to running around laughing and playing. It was hard to get ppl to understand that there was for real something wrong because they would spend 10 mins with him and say he looked just fine, but then they didn't see him an hour later burning up, eyes glazed over, breathing 75x/min, veins pulsing in his temples. Ppl called me a hypochondriac with my kids during the first yr, but after my child nearly dying from "just a fever" you can bet I took them in after the second day!

Re: I am just really worried! Fevers up to 104.7!

We had a rough night.. got up every 3 hours to check him and give tylenol/motrin. Called the dr this morning and the nurse is saying to come by to pick up blood work orders. I just don't know why I'm having to ask. You'd think since he's been running fevers off and on for 2 weeks this is something the doc would suggest being done without me having to ask. Whatever.. I probably won't know anything on the results until Monday since the dr office closes early at noon today. Thanks everyone for the replies. Some prayers that whatever this is just passes quickly would be appreciated too!!

Don't know if you're a SAHM or not, but maybe he is getting exposed to too many buggies out there and can't finish fighting off one, before another one starts? I had a friend that this happened to, and it took a couple months to figure this out (but no, he did not have the high temp, just alot of congestion, coughing, and ear infections.). Keep up with the baths, tylenol, motrin, and if you're not happy w/ the plan the Dr as said, don't be afraid to question him on it, ask why alot, and if you feel the need for more to be done, demand it! You are his mom, and you know your child best. If you feel something is wrong, keep fighting until you get your answer. And no, leukemia is not contagious.

If you go to the ER, you can get labs alot faster. They will order them w/ stats and you can get cbc counts, and test to rule out the bad stuff. My daughter had a fever over 104 and I taken her to the er the night before and they just said strep, so we are in youth care the next night and they ran all the test to rule out the really bad stuff and had results back with a 1 1/2. Just an idea so you don't have to worry all week especially it being a long weekend. Your the mama, listen to your gut. It will led you in the right direction. I will say a little pray for the little man.

Re: I am just really worried! Fevers up to 104.7!

I agree with the previous poster. I would want to get a second opinion. That is too long with high fevers. My ds would get scary high fevers like that with an ear infection. But his always responded quickly to antibiotics.

Listen to your gut and take him to the ER if you think your need to. You will probally get faster answers that way.

That is too long a period of time to have high fevers. I would try and get him in to see a different doctor today if you can. Call around to other pediatric offices and explain how long your son has had a fever and that you feel you need a second opinion in a hurry before the weekend. I would be hesitant to go back to your regular pediatrician if they seem so unconcerned.

But it will be a long weekend. And I agree a trip to the ER would get things resolved faster. Do you have a Pediatric hospital near you? If you have a choice I would go to a children's hospital.

The dr did order CBC.. his white blood cells were 27.5 which they said were very high and they put him on a different antibiotic (omnicef now).. Everything else was ok though... He must have some kind of virus if these antibiotics aren't doing anything, wouldn't you all think?
