Exclamation Engorged? Help please! *Update*

My right breast is very tender today. It feels full and I have some hard spots, but I can't seem to relieve them with nursing or pumping. It's only on my right side-my left side feels fine. The soreness is up high, near the top of my breast and back by my arm pit. It hurts if I reach my arm up high or reach across my body with my arm. It isn't painful to nurse or pump but let down is a little uncomfortable.

Is this engorgement and what else can I do?

**Well, it feels MUCH better. I was finally able to get him to nurse for 20 minutes on that side. I put him in the football hold and massaged my breast while he nursed. I'm still a little tender in one spot, but as a whole, the pressure and engorgement have gone away. Phew! I was really getting worried.

Thanks again for all the advice!

Have you tried warm compresses or warm wet rags on the hard spots, then expressing?

Hmm... Are there any red spots that feel hot to the touch? And do you feel nauseous or feverish?

No red spots, but I do feel kinda "blah:. I was just reading on Kelly Mom and I REALLY hope this isn't the beginning of mastitis. Should I call my MW just in case?

Oy! No fun. I would call just in case, and she may/probably will have some ideas for you as well. I was going to recommend heat/ice compress but if that isn't helping...

I hope it isn't mastitis though!

Re: Engorged? Help please!

If it were engorgement, I'd think it would be w/ both breasts and not just one. It sounds like a plugged duct to me. Back a long time ago when I had one, one of my LLL Leaders suggested I take a wide-tooth come and get in the shower and "comb" out the plug (w/ massaging, etc.) Hope you can get a shower w/ 4 kids, lol.

If it were mastitis, you'd be feeling MUCH worse than just "blah" though.

Re: Engorged? Help please!

Sounds like multiple clogged ducts -- try massaging it under warm water, like in a sink or bath. Definitely needs to come out or you'll be facing mastitis most likely.

Re: Engorged? Help please!

I am not getting any relief and the pain is getting worse. I'm sitting here with the heating pad on. Casey will not nurse-he's just not hungry right now. I tried different positions and tricks to try to entice him, but no luck. I even tried to get Noah to nurse.

definitely plugged ducts I think too! Get in the shower with water as hot as you can stand then knead from the lump toward the nipple. It takes awhile to get it out but thats what helped me. check out kellymom.com--maybe more advice there--I'm wrestling my lo right now so I can't look for the exact link but she should have some insight there too
