need some help figuring out evan's symptoms....please help us out!

ok i need to figure out if this is something normal or if i should be taking him to a doc right now.

evan has been doing this little shake thing all day. he did it this morning when he was upset with us but he wasn't that upset...it was just while i was holding him and trying to dry his hair. and did it a few more times but he wasn't angry...just plain old happy evan. he was just standing there. well just a little while ago, i look over and he's got his thumb in his mouth and a straw in his hand. all the sudden he does the shake thing and he bit down on his thumb! and hard! i watched his face turn into pain but he kept doing it! it wasn't for more then ten seconds...just like the rest of his shakes.

the shakes basically consist of him getting on his toes, clenching his fists and and clenching so hard his body shakes for about ten seconds straight. i don't know what to call them. it look uncontrollable....and he's not dumb. he wouldn't bite his thumb like he did. and the look on his face...it scared me.

and he's been really irritable lately...more temper tantrums and he hits a lot, though he still has his happy moments like usual. and also, he has been sleeping a lot more and using his words less for a little over a week now. i figured teething was causing that (thee molars and a front tooth are coming in at once) but now i am not sure. is there something else i should be worried about?

ETA-he hasnt had vaxes since january (his 6 month ones...he got them at 9 months). and he has been having liquidy poo if that helps.

and mods, if this needs to be moved to parenting i understand. i just need answers fast.

Hey Mama

How about ear infections? One of my kids I knew everytime he had one. With one of my dd I NEVER knew. Never had a fever or screamed (in pain).Usually we would end up with one just from cold symtoms or allergies due to the congestion and drainage while sleeping.

But you won't know for sure unless you go to the doc.
Good Luck,
Keep us posted

I hate to scare you, but I would really get him into a doctor fast. It *sounds* like he is seizing, but I have very little experience with seizures. Uncontrolled movements like that just make me think of small seizures. Sorry to alarm you mama.

I don't want to freak you out, but the first thing I thought of was seizures. People can be lethargic postictal (after a seizure), and it can affect their overall demeanor.

Regardless of if this is it or not, he needs to be evaluated. I wouldn't let it go. If the docs cannot do anything else for him at this moment, they can document your concerns and create a "baseline" for him. That way if he gets better or worse, they will have something to compare it to.

yeah my friend suggest febrile seizures. and honestly, when i saw him bite down on his thumb and just keep doing it...thats exactly what i thought.

i am calling the docs in the morning. i am worried about him.

Stick to your instincts Mama. Also, not to unnecessarily worry you, but I vaguely remember Jenny McCarthy talking about her son having seizures with his autism. I would only suggest this because you mentioned him using his words less. Let us know what the doctors say.
